Better Value Earning Credit Card

Hi Guys,

I have the American Express Platinum Edge & The Commonwealth Platinum Awards Card.

I'm not to familiar with point earning, only got them for their perks (Edge for the free flight + 10k points) & The Platinum Awards for the 42k FF points & no annual fee.

For day to day use, what is better to earn points / redeem / maximise value of points per card?

Thank you for your input.

  • Not sure what the CBA Platinum offers, but the Amex Platinum Edge is great for everyday-type purchases - 3pts/$ at supermarkets and 2pts/$ at servos.

  • +1

The Platinum Edge card alone is a very good card that will cover most of your needs.

If you want to start looking for "better points earn" you'd be getting very specific (arguably unnecessarily specific).
What I mean by that is, you'd be considering the following:

    • A MasterCard/Visa to use where AMEX is either not accepted, or accepted with a ridiculous surcharge (to be honest, you probably won't find anything better than ING 2% cashback)
    • A MasterCard/Visa to use when your transaction is $100+ and you can't/don't want to split it into 2 different transactions for cashback purposes (or to use for online purchases where AMEX is not accepted)
    • Another credit card that gives you more than 1pt/$ at places where you would otherwise earn 1pt/$ on your Platinum Edge - however, to get this you'll be copping a significant annual fee. Unless you sign up for one of the cards that often come up here with the first year annual fee waived.
    • If you spend a lot on foreign transactions, Bankwest More Platinum Mastercard, Bankwest Qantas Platnium Mastercard and Coles Rewards Mastercard would be your only options for cards that you earn you points and don't slap on a surcharge
