Guidelines Change: Incomparable Services: Web Design, Photo Shoots, SEO, Facebook Advertising

Our help should guide new users in what to post, what not to post, and how to use OzBargain. One of the things we have written is a FAQ for reps/businesses in which we recommend NOT posting the following:

  • Web Design
  • Car sales websites
  • Auto Mechanic servicing
  • Discount Facebook advertising
  • Photo shoots
  • Wedding related items
  • SEO services

Products:

  • Jewellery
  • Expensive mobile phone cases
  • Expensive HDMI cables

Of course this is the Internet and no one reads past the first sentence (so you probably won't see this). Deals that are Web Design, Discount Facebook advertising, Photo shoots / videography, or SEO services are incomparable services. E.G. A photo shoot from one photographer may be vastly different from another. Or a deal for a discounted design of a business website can be different than another company.

The result is that users are not happy in the comments resulting in the business/rep often not happy. It's a lose-lose situation for everyone.

We have now added guidelines which means these deals will not be permitted to be posted on OzBargain. Of course if a member finds a good deal (needle in a haystack), then we will leave it be.

I think this should alleviate some issues.

So thoughts? Too strict? Do we need to be more specific or add other categories?

TL;DR
Web Design, Discount Facebook advertising, Photo shoots / videography, or SEO services are now not permitted to be posted. Guidelines

Great move neil, and totally agree on all fronts. Removalists, or anything with a per hour charge should maybe be added as well?

    +1.
My "hide deals from this store/user" list was maxed out to 50 at point due to clutter from random/suspect businesses advertising things listed in the OP, and also:

    • removalists
    • 'financial newsletter' service https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/232364
    • fragrances (possible counterfeit items)
    • aerial impression photography
    • chair/work mats
    • "online-only" stores that already received lots of negative feedback at Whirlpool
    • candy crush/game strategy guide, out of all things
    • "hoverboard" scooters

Of course, genuine bargains should be an exception

    • Thanks for the list. That's quite good.

      • "hoverboard" scooters

Agree. Every hoverboard deal has ended badly. Will discuss.

      • candy crush/game strategy guide, out of all things

Can't say we get too many of them. Search shows 3 or 4 mostly bad.

      • removalists

Similar, some good, some bad but not many posted.

      • aerial impression photography

I can't recall seeing any nor do I see them in search.

Not sure about the rest as there have been good & bad deals.

      • "online-only" stores that already received lots of negative feedback at Whirlpool
      • chair/work mats
      • fragrances (possible counterfeit items)

We don't want to be determining what's a good deal and what's a bad deal. That's the community's job.

  • We've just added:

    • Resume/CV Services

We are still in discussions about other items but want to be specific and sure before we do a blanket ban.

  • Added

    • Assignment/Writing Services

    See updated guidelines

  • Added

    • Social Media Management Services
    • +1

But that was such a popular post :P

    • In discussion but the issues are not so much that they are incomparable but more the safety concerns, legality etc.

  • Ok, as someone who does SEO for a living I know there are a LOT of dodgy SEO providers as well as a lot of crap web designers too!

Can I suggest that you allow from some of our industries specifically their FREE info packs at least?

For example, if I product a PDF that genuinely gives value to someone should they not be able to get it through this site?

    I hope my thoughts help!
