USB Type C bay drive for PC?

Hey guys, I am wondering how to go about adding USB C (USB 3.1 in the smaller form) to the front of my computer.
Has anyone figured this out?

I have found a couple of bay devices with USB Type C, but they don't really seem to be available anywhere.
I'd like to get it for the Galaxy S7 coming in a month or so. Is it even viable to get USB Type C on the front of my computer?

  • Are you talking about something like this?

I can't seem to find them for sale either. Might have to wait a little while until they come to market.

    • Yeah I think you're right.

  • Galaxy s7 is likely to have usb b port, due to compatibility issues with the current VR headset. At least that's what I've been hearing. So if I were you I'd wait until they announce the handset before committing to usb c ports if your sole reason is s7.

Wouldn't be too long til they announce it anyways.

    • Nice. Thank you.

    Type C made for Mac

  • Type C brings a whole swag of stuff - its not just the new connector, so any expansion would have to be a PCI express card of some form, and probably not cheap.

Connector has to be high-data rated, so that requires thick, shielded cabling.

Cheapest way would probably be to buy a new motherboard that supports it, and then buy a USB-C extension cable if those exist to bring the port around to the front.

    • It is literally just a connector. A type C port or cable could be USB 2.0 or 3.1, just like type A. It might support USB PD 2.0 or it might not. All phones that use type C currently are USB 2.0 for example. The OP would probably want USB 3.1 but that has nothing do with type C.

      • If you just wanted the connector you can just buy a cable adapter from USB A to USB C for your phone then?

  • I'm not sure what you gain over the type A connector, which also supports USB 3.1? All it would do is restrict that port to type C devices when it could be used for both. USB 3.1 type A to type C cables work just fine (as long as they are certified). I have a Nexus 6P and type C is great - for the device end of the cable which is constantly being connected/disconnected. For the other end, I couldn't care less.

    • Ah yes, 3.1 type A to 3.1 type C sounds like an effective solution.
I suppose the only advantage is the form factor novelty. I've been thinking about getting a type C USB stick too but I wouldn't be using it that often anyway.

      • Fair enough. I dig novelty too. I haven't seen type C USB sticks but I do think the form factor would be handy there. As you were then ;)

  • I'd just wait, i bet the phone come with a USB2/3 adapter
