Claim Tax without a Receipt

Hi,

Just want some advise on this. I bought some furniture from Ikea last week for the office. I have the Sales Order but lost the receipt. I called up Ikea and asked for a reprint but was told that they don't / can't provide a reprint of receipt.

Now, I wonder what do I do to claim tax on the office furniture that I have purchased. Should I just forget about claiming it?

  • Credit Card statement? or need Tax Invoice for GST?

    • I paid for it using part gift card ($500) and rest on a credit card ($100+). :(. Yeah for both GST as well as depreciation claim for my small business.

I was surprise that Ikea is not able to reprint the receipt. I wonder what if a receipt is needed in a court case.

      • What's there returns policy like?

        • Hmm.. I believe it's the usual Ikea's return policy. No question asked.

I just found that businesses are obligated to provide prove of transaction (https://www.choice.com.au/shopping/consumer-rights-and-advic…). I'll call up Ikea customer service to get that. That should sort me out with the GST and depreciation claim I think.

          @sly:
"lost the receipt " they provided it. i dont think its their responsibility to provide you with a copy at a later date…
ask nicely and they may help you out , try and through that argument at them and you might just find resistance..

@Settero: yeah I'll just ask them nicely, if not probably will just return it and get it again.

return it, get refund, buy it again, keep receipt this time

    • haha, yeah might just do that. I'll try asking nicely for a prove of transaction, otherwise just have to return those furniture.

  • Oh they can reprint it for you, same as I could in my business for years. I still have access to records over 10 years old. The difference is, will they.

Ask nicely, and ask if there is a fee. If not forthcoming ask the ATO for advise on how to proceed.

    • Ikea just said they can't reprint.. but they are providing me a transaction record. I'll check with ATO if that's ok.

      • If still no joy, just so there are no more of their excuses, take in a docket book/invoice book with you, basic details handwritten will do, as long as they copy the info of the records with pertinent info.
You, them, what, when and $$, ABN, the words 'Tax Invoice', Inv' number and the word 'Copy' are the minimums needed from memory.
I am sure the ATO will provide the necessary ammo you need.
