Disappearing Xbox digital purchases? No longer available on the marketplace?

I bought Serious Sam 3 BFE (Xbox 360) when it was on sale in November. I hadn't played it in a while and when I just went to play it, a message popped up saying the game was no longer available on the marketplace and that the pin would be removed. I checked my hard drive and the game download was no longer there. My saves were on cloud so they're still there, but WTF?

Has anyone else noticed games disappearing from the marketplace? The same thing happened with Mafia which was a 'games with gold' game before. It also disappeared some time ago.

The game doesn't appear to be purchasable on the marketplace now, at least for me:

How is it that I can no longer play a game that I purchased?! Even if they took it down from the marketplace, how does that give them the right to remove the game entirely from my system so that I can't even play it anymore?

I can't seem to find anything about this online. Has anyone else not experienced this?

    I did, they took Doom off the market and I couldn't download it again. Two years later after pulling out the Xbox it was back up there…

    It's painful, but I think if you are on your console you can go back through your purchase history and redownload it that way.

    I've actually noticed quite a few games disappearing off my 360 after re-downloading them on my XB1 using backwards compatibility…not sure why, I was under the impression that I should still have access to BC games on both consoles??? :(

    Is it not worrying though? I mean if they can just essentially take your games away just because they've stopped distributing them, even though you paid for them. It's like a car manufacturer taking your car back because production of that car has stopped.

    If this is any indication of how digital downloads will work going forwards, I might just stick to physical copies when I can.
