Looking for an E Bike Kit

Hi All,

I am looking forward to get a DIY for my bicycle (It is a hybrid cheap bike that I purchased from Kmart a while back and has served me well for over 6 months now). I am moving house and would have to commute to work 5 KMs each side inclusive of some steep hills so thought of getting one fitted on my bicycle.

One suggestion I received was this : http://www.emax-ebikes.com.au/store/c1/Featured_Products.htm…

Would be interested to know what fellow ozbargainers have to suggest.

Regards

  • Considering your cheap bike, those look like expensive kits.
    Take a look on eBay.

  • whatever e-thing you add to your bike, make sure it's road legal

here in VIC, you can have an additional motor that has UP TO 250W (about half the output of a battery powered drill) - anything more than that and it turns your pushbike into a motorbike

    • Valid point. I am in Tassie and I think its the same here. I will keep it to 250 W.

  • Thanks for your link, I'm actually looking to do an e-bike conversion too with the newly proposed IPART changes to public transport. I live about 25km away from work. A commute takes about 15 minutes walk to train station and 60 minutes travel. When I used to cycle on a carbon bike, it was about 90 minutes from my door to work at my quickest. With an ebike I'm hoping to make it easier on me to do each day.

Oh and for the prices on emax they're actually quite good. The Bafang will generally set you back about $600 for the motor alone and about $1000 for the battery and motor. Looking on international websites even price it around that but in USD. Cycling seems bigger in VIC than NSW and there are more shops there for electric bikes so it's good to find a NSW retailer which offers warranty.

Thanks Magikz, will consider it in my final shortlist. A friend of mine recently got it fitted on his Bike and I would do the same. Good luck and let me know your product selection once done.

  • Hi Guys,

I was hesitant to put a new kit on cheap K Mart bike and ended up buying an old ebike (with 500W BAFANG kit) from my friend. He did 4200 kms on it in 2 years and I think it can go for another 2 more years. COnsidering the cost I paid ($500) I think I will break even before 1 year and its saving there after. Anyways good luck with your future purchases and keep me informed if something exciting comes up.

    Thanks
