Portable HDD Enclosure: Advice Needed!

Hi all

The USB 3 port on my 1TB Buffalo Ministation from way back has broken off (I left the cable plugged into the HDD, and it snapped INSIDE the connector). To fix this problem, I bought a $10 USB3 HDD enclosure from eBay.

My problem stems from the fact that I didn't check the specification of the enclosure or my hard drive; turns out I have a 12.5mm Samsung HDD (Model HM100UI) and the case I bought as well as all the cases online are for "up to 9.5mm".

Has anyone come across this issue before? Any ideas? I'm currently using the hard drive with just the bottom half of the enclosure!

Any ideas are appreciated!

  • I'm currently using the hard drive with just the bottom half of the enclosure!

Sounds like the workaround I would suggest, short of buying the proper case that is! ;)

    • Haha I've had a half day so I spent the afternoon tinkering with it; so far I've got both sides on, held together with cable ties. The only exposed part now is where the "lid" of the enclosure would've been, to cover the HDD from the side opposite the SATA connector!

  • You may consider investing in one of high quality aluminium cases for 2.5in drives which take up to 12.5mm drives (Thermaltake Muse, Vantec NexStar, etc., around $25). Such cases also fit slimmer HDDs and SSDs, so are likely to outlast your old HDD. Meanwhile your workaround should be fine (and provides better cooling!).

  • I have one of these (foreground black one, ISO-231):

It fits 12.5mm drives though it isn't particularly good.

Saw this on the other thread good reviews.

    • This looks great especially for a local product.

"- Support any 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD less than 9.5mm in thickness"

Major problem is the <9.5mm drive, since my one is 12.5mm (as is the case for all 1TB 2.5SDDs) :(

      Thanks for the suggestion though!
