HDMI output to TV and WiFi

Hi guys, just wondering if it is possible to take the output from say the Foxtel we have in the lounge room (HDMI) to the TV but at the same time stream it to the home network/WiFi? This way people can watch Foxtel on the TV how it is but I am also able to bring up a stream of it or something similar on my PC?

Not sure if this is even possible or what it would be called to look at buying something for it.

Any help appreciated,

Cheers

  • I used to do something similar years ago - back when pay TV was still popular - and streamed my Austar to the wi-fi so I could watch it on my tablet or phone, or even anywhere I had internet really.

Unless you are paying for Foxtel for something specific (like sports I guess) wouldn't it be far simpler to just use a streaming service? I use Hulu and Netflix and can watch them anywhere when I have mobile data or wi-fi and the programming choices are heaps better (and not limited to repeats a bazillion times a week).

    • What did you use to stream to wi-fi?

      • Pc with tv capture card - outputed to vlc player streaming I think. It has been more than 10 years so I'm not sure.

  • I understand Foxtel Go but I wanted it to be streamed over WiFi, not using additional data. Maybe I should not have mentioned Foxtel, any HDMI output really is what I want. Just something that relays whatever is coming out of the HDMI to my network, at the same time still taking it through to the TV.

  • The Epiphan encoders will do this for you. Probably cost more than your TV and may run into trouble with HDCP protected content (you'd need to research).
