Getting A Motorbike Licence from Another State

I'm 23 and hate driving cars. I don't really have the ability to drive anywhere on learners, have done about 30 hours in the past when I had my logbook.

I want to get a motorbike licence but for that to happen in QLD you need to do 100 hours on your L's, go for your P test, hold that for a year, then get the motorbike licence.

In NSW you just go and get a motorbike licence when you pass the couple of tests (makes sense)

I'm wondering if it is possible to just go to NSW for a few days and get the motorbike learner licence then come back to QLD?

I've been riding motorbikes since I was 10, and driving cars as well as farm machines like tractors, bobcats and UTVs so it's not that I'm incapable, I just feel really uncomfortable driving cars.

Thanks guys

  • Won't work. To get a license in NSW (even a Learner's license) you have to prove your identity which includes proving your NSW Residential Address.

    RMS Link: http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/licence/identity/index.html

So unless you have a NSW Residential Address with some form of ID to prove that you live there you won't be able to get a license.

If you can't provide a document that proves your address you have to get a current NSW License holder to give you a Reference Statement. And they will ring this person to check and confirm details. This is a legal statement and it's an offense to lie on it, so you'd have to have someone in NSW willing to commit a crime for you.

Why not just get your L's and go through the process? You can still ride on your L's, you'll just be restricted to the kind of bike and speed etc. Once it's done it's done for life. Either that or really commit to the scheme and move to NSW. :)

    • Thanks for the info! You can't ride a motorbike on your L's unfortunately, you need to actually have your car P's for an entire year before you are allowed to touch a motorbike.

  • you need proof of residential address.

Also, you'd need to wait 6 months, rebook the "ps test" and do the test with your own (or rented) motorcycle

  • Damn, 100 hours seems like a high bar– I somehow lucked out and got an instant unrestricted (full) motorbike license when I moved to VIC from WA with a <250 condition– they didn't even seem to bat an eyelid.

    • Very lucky! I just discovered I can ride a 50cc or less scooter on a p plate car license so that will work out until I get a motorbike license.
