Wellington, New Zealand

Hi,

I've just booked flights to New Zealand in late June/early July for 1 week (Winter). We won't be there for skiing or snow activities. It's mainly for a quick escape from Melbourne and want to see some sights that the North Island has to offer. Plus flights return were under $300 :P

Does anyone have an suggestions for Wellington itself, or a good path to take when driving. We're departing from Wellington as well, so we'll have to make our way back there.

Were a late 20s couple happy to explore, but more nice restaurant and couple of drinks after a day of exploring.

Thanks

  • I'm a huge fan of the Entertainment Book. It only takes a couple of dinners out to make your money back, then everything else is saving you money.

Here's a link to the Wellington 2015/16 book so that you can browse through the restaurants and other attractions currently on offer.

    http://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/search-the-book.aspx?boo…

Note that this edition will expire on 1 June 2016, but you'll be able to buy the 2016/17 edition from approx April. You'll need to find a friend or charity that sells the books though, as you can't buy them in stores or online.

Even if you don't decide to buy an Entertainment Book, the website is useful because it contains links to the websites of the various restaurants/businesses promoted.

    P.S. Have a great time!

  • Another suggestion …

You'll find a link at the bottom of the OZbargain webpage to Choice Cheapies i.e. the NZbargain website.

  • Rotorua 6 Hours drive north…Lake Taupo too both excellent. imho

Get around to Days Bay (Opposite side of wellington harbour) can get a ferry there.

  • Just outside of Wellington is a really quirky putt putt golf course / sculpture park called Carlucci Land

Not everyone's style but I really enjoyed it. Had the place to ourselves on a weekday, they use a honesty box so no employees even.

    • When you return, please turn off the lights, as you'll be the last to leave NZ.

  • don't forget to bring passport. heard it happened too often to NZ.

  • Don't they have a cable car that goes up a hill to somewhere ?

What about meanwhile looking for cheap domestic sale flights for 1 or 2 nights to Queenstown or Rotorua or Auckland ?

Melbourne to Wellington in winter. Same same.

  • I've been to NZ at least 4 times and Wellington a few.

Te papa (The national Museum) is great, you have to do that (And its free (OZBargain ftw)).
    Botannical Gardens - Free
There is a maritime museum there thats free (This is turning into a totally OZB friendly post)

About 1.5 hours north is Owlcatraz which is a bird sanctuary I've been 2 twice which is good.

In Wellingon take the road around the coast especially the south coast where the scenery is amazing.

The cable care ride is ok.

If you get the chance drive up to Rotorua, its a fair way but lots to see an do if you like Volcanic activity.

ALthough really expensive up at Mata Mata you can do the Lord of the Rings Tour.

There is a Weka Cave in Wellingotn (Out past the airport) which is where they made props and stuff for LOTR but you may need to book.

If your really bored - DRive to Cape Palliser and the lighthouse (Its a long bloody way!!!) but you will probably see Seals and the most amazing scenery. There is a restaurant at Lake Ferry. Its on a crazy NZ road with Rock Falls, driving around cliffs with no barriers etc so well worth the experience. I remember my partner yelling at me that its too dangerous and 2 mins later we see an old Grandma driving on that road - so can't be that bad lol. Fill up with Petrol before you go. On the way stop at Rimutaka Hill (Google the Images) for a great view.

Um thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

  • Thanks to everyone so dar.

I think we've ruled out hiring the campervan, we'll book a nice car for the week and stop at places along the way.

  • I've been looking at fares to Wellington for later this year (from Sydney) and am jealous that you nabbed flights for <$300!! If you don't mind can you please let me know who you booked with and wether it was during a sale etc.

    • It was Jetstar and don't think it was a sale. It's school holidays too, may have just been very lucky.

      • thanks for that. I can't find anything for <$400 despite looking over several months, will keep hunting.
