Best Line Trimmer for under $200?

Hi guys

I've done a search of the forums and didn't come to anything conclusive?

With so many line trimmers on the market, I was wondering for advice for the best one I could buy for about $200, maybe $250?

Petrol or electric doesn't matter, but I'm also going to be trimming a lot of random weeds (thick ones as well) so I'd need the more powerful one?

Bunnings and Masters both have so many options, I get interested in one, read the reviews and they all seem so negative so I'm turning to help here. Anyone have any recommendations? Preferably one that's easier to use as I never really have done this before. But it doesn't seem to hard to get the hang of?

Cheers ozbargainers

I used to be a petrol kind of person
but I have since converted to the Ryobi One+ line trimmer. Starts first time everytime. No need to fill up, change filter, hoses, clean spark plugs. Less vibration, noise and fumes, lighter.

Not good for long grass, but with your budget of <$200 you wont be cutting long grass anyway. You need a +$500 Stihl for that.

    • Is it easy to replace the trimmer line ?

      • so easy a kid can do it.

except I have a spring in mine otherwise same method.

        • So the bump feed system is gone, it just lets out some line when you start it up ?

I have a shed full of dud line trimmers.

        • @Baysew: feeds itself
          me too.

        • @captobvious: Thanks, it looks the goods.
I notice it's a brand exclusive to Bunnings, they were not letting Masters have a free kick !

        • @Baysew:

they have a monopoly and these ONE+ goods
It was never going to be a level playing field

    • so we are talking about this one? http://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-1-5ah-li-ion-cordle…
and thanks for your input. will be looking at them now.

btw what is this (what differences?)? http://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-305mm-cut-cordless-…

One is the kit with batt and charger the other is just the trimmer

        • A couple of days ago I did over 200m of edges/fenceline with a ryobi one+ 18v line trimmer. About 1/3 of it was pretty thick grass too. I had a 4ah battery and it used about half the battery. The bigger batteries tend to put out more power than the small ones though.

I find it handy, but have other one+ tools and 4 batteries in total. One problem with the cordless versions is if you don't have a spare battery and it goes flat during use you need to wait for the charge time to continue. Other than that they are light weight, no cords and no messy refuelling. Plug a battery in and go. The ryobi model also has a quick twist on the shaft to change the angle of the head to cut vertical for edging, beats holding the trimmer at a silly angle.
