Need Reviews about Camry Hybrid H

Hi OzBargainers,

I am planning to buy a used car (mid-sized family sedan). We have almost locked down on a Camry Hybrid H AVV50R (11/2014 build) from Pickles Auction. We liked the car and looks like a good deal considering:

  • its quite new, 34k on odometer
  • still under manufacturer's warranty
  • we can buy extended warranty for 5 yrs from dealer
  • hybrid is eco friendly
  • Camry in general has good reviews for a family car

However, before paying the balance, I wanted to get some more info. I checked toyota's website but couldn't find Hybrid H there. After googling a bit it seems like it was discontinued last year.

Does anyone here own one or have info about:

  • Original full driveaway price for Hybrid H (entry model)
  • Any pros/cons of owning Hybrid in general or Camry in particular
  • Although we plan to use it for long time, it would be good to know how it stands from resale perspective.

    • Hiya,
Just had an experience with a Taxi driver who has a Hybrid Camry.
His car had done 750K and was still in great condition, with just basic service costs over that journey.
He is planning to replace it sometime this year but pointed out that some of the Ford and Holden taxi drivers are on their third vehicle in that same space of time.
You will be very happy with your purchase!
    • Same here, asked 2 Camry H taxi drivers in the past, both said no issues with the car. One had 450k, another 600k on the clock.

I would argue that hybrid is very eco-friendly though, batteries are quite toxic and take a lot of effort to manufacture and utulise.

  • 8yr warranty on hybrid battery.
Its a plain boring Toyota. Not much will go wrong.
Get the extended warranty as a just in case, if anything electronics goes wrong with a hybrid it can be expensive, not many auto elecs will want to touch it and will suggest you go back to toyota

Judging from the older hybrid prius, once thet hit the 10yr mark they are not worth much. They become unreliable because of all the electronics

If you want resale buy a diesel hilux or landcruiser.

  • Regarding the hybrid being discontinued, I believe it is no longer a model in itself but hybrid drivetrains is available in a few of the different models in the new Camry released in January this year - Atara and Altise.

    • Right. Hybrid is now made as an engine option in existing models like altise, atara etc but i was keen to compare driveway(incl gst) price. Hybrid h looks like a close match to basic atara model. I wanted to compare the original price to see if its not way off the current one and gauge some year to year depreciation :) if the data was available. But its alright most reviews look promising so I'd give that one a pass.

      Cheers.

      • Have a look on redbook.com.au for then and now prices.

  • wow. looks like pretty much unanimous reviews :)
    thanks everyone. appreciate your feedback.

  • We've had a 2007 Camry Altise since 2010 (bought second hand at auction) and it's been a great car. We have 3 car seats in the back for our young kids and the boot is quite large for the size of the car, although packing the boot for holidays was like a game a Tetris. We recently bought a Kia Sorento for a bit more space but we are keeping the Camry as a second car and we'll run into the ground.

Looks like the 2014 Hybrid has a lot more technology than the 2007 models so I'd say go for it. Just don't get too attached to one particular car as you don't want to end up paying too much. Good luck in the auction!

    • Thanks mate.
Although i'm more of a naive buyer so had to go with fixed price option.
Thanks for the review nonetheless :)
