When is the best time to buy flights to London?

HI All, I'm planning a trip to the U.K. in August/September, visiting family, the sights and maybe to catch an EPL game.

I've been looking into buying airline tickets and the cheapest I can currently get is around $1800~, after reading a few other forums, people advise to wait till around 7 weeks before the trip to buy flights as this is the best time to.

Is this true? Does anyone have any experience in buying flights to London on a semi-regular basis?

Thanks.

  • I would like to think that the earlier you book, the cheaper it will be. I was having a look at this in about October last year, and flights were $1,430 return to Europe, including London, on Cathay Pacific. There were flights that were a little cheaper but on other airlines I did not want to take.
I booked in May/June, and I had friends who booked for August/September return at that a month later.
Unless there's a specific sale for your specific dates, I don't see how they would keep getting cheaper>

If your alright with 28th September, there is a deal on now with Qatar airways: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/234659?utm_source=searchal…

    • Unfortunately a bit too late for me, it also seems that none of the sales involve Brisbane sadly.

    According to Momondo:

    • Cheapest time to buy a ticket for Brisbane — London is approximately 59 days to departure.
    • China Southern Airlines, Thai Airways and Malaysia Airlines are the cheapest airlines to fly this route.
    • Cheapest time of year to fly to London from Brisbane is February and March. Most expensive are June and December.
  • 7-8 weeks sounds about right according to this article:

    • Thanks for this, I think I'll wait on buying flights for now in hopes of a sale in the near future.

Best to not buy a tkt to LHR, they have landing charges that add hundreds of $$$. Go to somewhere like Paris, AMS or somewhere, have a day or so there and catch the Chunnel or a local hopper or a ferry. The saving not going to LHR would pay for it.

    • Completely agree, based on a lot of experience there. Local family members avoid it like the plague.

HELL… even just to avoid the chaos, and personally, the psychological trauma of being held-up so close to my end destination (usually Dublin). Just Get Me There!!

Sign up for Finnair emails too. They have specials and Helsinki is lovely in summer. I had the best stopover there and my hotel loaned me a bike and map, as well as one of the best brekkies ever. Bliss.

  • You'll just have to check everyday.
I was looking through skyscanner everyday for almost 2 months.
Initially got 1500 with china southern flying perth to london return but thought there must be a better deal out there. Then the price went up till about 1800. Finally, last month, not sure why but the price went down quite alot. Got a better deal with Emirates for 1600, bought directly from their website.

    PRO TIP:
I'm not sure where you are located, but if you're in Perth, you can get cheap flights perth-singapore (300) then it's dirt cheap from singapore to london (around 1100)

  • Also if you have an iOS device checkout Hopper - it monitors your trip for price changes and gives you a guesstimate on how much you could potentially save if you wait. https://www.hopper.com/

    • Haven't heard too much about Hopper but the reviews on the Google Play Store don't look to promising.

I'm trying out SkyScanner for Android now, hopefully that will help.
