Any Recommendation for Camera - $1k Budget

Hi everyone,

I want to purchase a good camera as my new habit. My budget is less than $1,000. Do you guys have any recommendation for a good one? Should I go for a new one? Where I can get a good deal?

Thanks in advance.

  • Well it all depends on what you mean by camera.

  • I bought the Panasonic GX7 and think it's absolutely fantastic. Get the 42.5mm G Lens by Panasonic too and it'll make your portaits pop!

GX8 if you can stretch the budget (you can sometimes pick these up in the ebay sales for around $950) - and you'll have 4K video too.

Buy second hand, 99.9% of the population who take up photography as a hobby drops it after a while, there's some terrific deals you can get by buying from those said people.

$1,000 is heaps, for example a full frame Canon 5D Mark I could be had for ~$400, depending on your subject of interest a basic zoom lens of $200 would have you set for a long time. A more costly method of a few great primes taking your pick of 24mm f/2.8, STM 40mm f/2.8, STM 50mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8 are all excellent for starters to professional level. The same is applicable with Nikon alternatives.

I used to buy gears new until I realised that most people don't stick to a hobby for any notable duration of time, and most people baby their things, for years now I have saved significant amount of money capitalising on that.

Don't be bogged down by gear, no one has ever looked at an excellent photo and cared or noticed the equipment that it came from.

    • Cant agree more with this. Ive bought 2 high end lenses this year 2nd hand for a fraction of the new price, and one was actually unused still in its box.
keep an eye on gumtree and other camera forums.

    • But then what about warranty? Or is that passed onto you?

      • If so it comes with warranty and receipt then that's a bonus otherwise it is a gamble that you have to take, you cant have everything!

On the lenses there's very little to go wrong, they're made with extreme precision, some may have mold inside but that's due to poor storage by owner and is easy to spot, so avoid.

Camera wise read up on some common faults and ask seller, you'll have to rely a bit on their honesty if not physically buying in person, if in doubt walk away there's plenty of cameras to be had all the time.
