Boardman MTB Team 29er 2014 $799 Delivered @ Boardman Bikes Australia

670

Bargain of a beginner mountain bike for $799 delivered. Very rare to see a 29er hard tail with a Rockshox fork and SRAM X7 or equivalent drive train under $1000, not to mention Mavic rims and Continental tyres.

Boardman are a fairly big brand in Britain named after ex-pro and Olympic medallist Chris Boardman. Not so well known here but appears to be part of a big clearance sale of older Boardman stock by the Aus distributor.

Small, medium and large in stock at this time of writing.

@wtfnodeal: Well you replied, so I couldn't have been that crazy. :)

        • @jbnz: Oh I should have added that it took a credit card chargeback before they rang him back. At least it worked out in the end.

  • Sorry for not knowing much about bikes yet, but I've been eyeing this one off for ages at $499 (add $70 for delivery)..:

    http://www.cyclingdeal.com.au/buy/2015-hasa-comp-3.0-mountai….

It seems to have great components. How does it compare to this one in the deal?

    • Nowhere good as this. Fork alone Spinner is far from Rockshock but that bike is $230 cheaper.
Btw you want a 29er or 26er? Your link to Cyclingdeal is a 26er.

      • Oh, gotcha.. thanks heaps mate. I'll try to find an apples / apples comparison.

  • Damn I wish they had an XL size. Been looking at getting a decent MTB for a while, as I have tracks a few hundred meters away.

If anyone knows any other decent deals, please let me know.

  • Bummer looks like only small is available now

    • I was too late and no more medium size for me.
Anyone bought a medium size and changed their mind, I am willing to take it off you.

Cheaper components than the Boardman across the board from what I can see

  • Arrived already :D

  • +1

Mine arrived yesterday too. Pain to put together with all these little plastic bits stuck everywhere.
Invoice is from AMart Sports interestingly.

Disconcerting that it has the "Not for stunting or offroad use" sticker on it like the $100 kmart BSO's have.

    • Yep makes sense since it's direct from the Super Retail Group which encompasses Amart/Goldcross

    • Hi Hellbound,

The sticker is mandatory requirement of the AUS: 1927/2007 bicycle standard. All Boardman bikes comply with the relevant EU standard and the before mentioned Australian standard. It is an unfortunate requirement as the bicycle is exceptionally capable for its use.

Now that you have put the bike together I am sure you will enjoy!

  • From their website:

My bike arrived today. As I understand from the above description, this bike is for off-road riding. There is however a sticker on the frame saying:

"Warning, this bicycle is not designed for off-road use or for stunting."

What do you think Oz-bargainers, is this false or deceptive?

    • Interesting…

Personally I wouldn't be bothered by what seems like a generic warning label but if your concerned perhaps make an enquiry direct with the seller.

      • -1

Yes, it does bother me. I'll definitely contact them. This is more than a matter of a generic warning label. Either it is an off-road bike or not. They claim the RRP was $1299, I paid $799. I may be naive to expect to get a beginner's mountain bike for eight hundred bucks, but this is how they advertise them. Have you heard a term "item not as described"? I'd say this is it. Luckily, I paid with PayPal. If this is not an off-road bike, I can get it much cheaper at Kmart.

        • Yep completely valid.

But boardman bikes are without a doubt miles better then anything from Kmart.

    • Hi Notalotofmoney,

The sticker is mandatory requirement of the AUS: 1927/2007 bicycle standard. All Boardman bikes comply with the relevant EU standard and the before mentioned Australian standard. It is an unfortunate requirement as the bicycle is exceptionally capable for its use.

You've got to be kidding, right?

There are reasons why we have standards in Australia. You couldn't drive a car if it wasn't compliant with ADR (Australian Design Rules), it would be illegal to sell a twenty dollar bicycle helmet if it didn't meet Australian Safety standards and have an AS sticker. Your statement that the bicycle conforms to European standards as if it was somehow superior to ours is a bit silly. You haven't the slightest idea what is involved to accept the item as safe to use in Australia. As an example it may be, as someone mentioned above, that brakes overheat. It may be true or not, I cannot tell as I don't work with bikes, but I accept it as possible, because the Australian climate is generally hotter than the European. This is when I rely on other people's hard work and the AS, not some salesman's spin-of.

Now I have a question: Which company are you exactly associated with? On the box my bike came in, there is a print: Imported from Taiwan for BIKE EXCHANGE in Queensland. (I have no issue with the origin of the item, as long as it is of reasonable quality). On the delivery docket there is a logo AMART SPORTS. The tax invoice says: BOARDMAN BIKES AUSTRALIA in NSW and the bicycle was sent from AMART Sports in Victoria (I presume).

If you were upfront with that, that the Boardman Mtb Team 29Er is "not designed for off-road use in Australia we wouldn't have this conversation, but you weren't. I find the description of this bike on your website as misleading, dishonest and deceitful, if it is illegal or fraudulent I will know when I contact the relevant consumer protection departments in QLD, NSW and Victoria.

I have no personal interest in this at all, just a fellow OzB'er but I am aware that sometimes there are things in standards that arent necessarily relevant to us all. I remember reading an article on how the safety standards for cars included the positioning of ISOFIX anchors for the attachment and positioning of Baby seats, apparently not having these baby seat anchors could lower the number of safety stars that a car had. Obviously this is important to folks that have young children but not really relevant to car buyers that arent going to fit baby seats. Somehow however this wasnt communicated in full as most folks just want to know if the car got 4 stars or 5 for safety.

I am a keen cyclist and I know that if you buy a road bike, even a $12K Trek Madone Project One or a Pinarello or Colnago etc it will come with a rear reflector attached to the seatpost and reflectors fitted to the spokes of the wheels. This is in the Aust standards so manufacturers and bike shops have to comply as this is the law. Most people dropping thousands on a bike are committed cyclists and I've yet to meet any that dont have these things removed before the bike leaves the shop. Anybody turning up at a Shop or Bunch ride with reflectors in their wheels would probably be openly laughed at. When I bought my last roadbike for a few thousand the mechanic was embarrassed to put them on, after he had fulfilled his obligations under the Australian standard and I had paid for the bike he handed me the tools so that I could take them straight back off again and throw them in his bin before I left the shop. It was farcical and ridiculous but it had to be complied with because it was in the standards. My MTB has been built up with bits I bought off the Internet or 2nd hand bits from eBay/Facebook etc. I've no idea if my MTB meets ANZ standards but it goes well offroad!!

  • I bought a Bradman 3 years ago and still goes good.

Got my Boardman Air 9.8, it's truly a beautiful bike, but I'm disappointed that the sizing was not what what your website led me to believe. On your website it says that size Small Air bikes come with 110mm stem and 420mm bars, but the size Small bike I received came with 100mm stem and 400mm bars. I spent 3.5k on your bike, I expect to get exactly what your website denotes, bike fit is already a finicky thing, and we are buying on the internet with no chance to test ride, which makes the accuracy of your written spec all the more important, this is unacceptable…

    • not meeting advertised specs…? that sounds like a serious issue for complaint. at that price point youd want everything to be 100% in re specs & components

      • I complained to Boardman and they simply linked me to their hilariously named "Customer Service Policy" page, which states "All specifications are subject to change without notice". WTF. Should be called "How to lose customers policy"… They did say I could return the bike, but seriously who could be bothered doing that. Useless customer service, they should just send out the right parts… Ultimately I am happy with the bike, but I will NEVER buy from Boardman again, unless it is an irresistible bargain like this bike was, I would be utterly raging at this situation if I had paid full price.

        • All specs subject to change is refering to for customers who place new orders at later days with an updated specs list? Wtf if i order specs with 29" wheels they send the bike with 20" kids wheels and point me to customer service policy too? This is totally unacceptable.

        • I know, it's ridiculous, changing model spec to another equivalent model is one thing, but changing the sizing is unacceptable. According to Boardman buying the correct size bike with them is a total crapshoot which they are not responsible for.
