Melbourne CBDBar/Restaurant with Great View/Rooftop? + Airport bus help??

Hi, I am heading to Melbourne CBD early March for a few days with my mum.

Just wondering where I could take my mum (in her mid 50s) for a nice drink on one of the evenings?

She prefers somewhere with a decent view. I was considering roof top cinema but they aren't playing anything we'd both enjoy.

My budget for the evening would be around $50 for both of us for a couple of drinks.

Also, what would be the best way to get to Park Hyatt Hotel (1 Parliament Pl East Melbourne) from Southern Cross station? Would tram be our only option? Seems silly to catch a cab for 8 min ride… What do you think?

The Lui Bar (where one of the top restaurants Vue the Monde is) has a great view and won't cost the earth if you are careful with what drinks you order.

PS. It's also one of the more upmarket bars in town. Will make the trip more 'special'.

Also, did you indicate in the topic that you are taking the airport bus - don't they offer a complimentary shuttle to the major CBD hotels from Spencer St

  • $50 for a couple of drinks each? You'll be pushing it.

    • Usually a beer or a lemon, lime and bitter are safe options from the price point of view.
      <$10 per drink.

Yeah at the worlds shittest bar. Go to a nice one and try and get a beer for under $10. Riverland charges almost $20 for a pint of Asahi.

$10 a beer for Sapporo or Kronenburg beer at the Lui Bar.

        • Riverland is not a nice bar, your argument is thus invalid.

        • @Drew22:

          True. It's shit.

The Atrium bar on the 35th floor of the Sofitel is also very nice,

So there you go, you now have a few possibilities.

+1 to this. No 35, the restaurant on the same level, has amazing views too.

      • Thanks! just booked a table for one of the nights :)

    • Thanks so much for your suggestions!! and I accidentally booked flights to Avalon Airport and not the main one, so I can't take advantage of the free airport bus service. Guess we are going to have to cab it.

      • If you are travelling without checkin luggage, just catch a 109 tram along Collins St to outside Park Hyatt.
It's in the free tram zone, so all free.

        • It is still free even if you have checked in luggage ;)

  • Also, best time to go is in the early evening 1-2 hours before sunset. Then you can enjoy the view with daylight and at night, and won't be so crowded.

OH then we should head there first before dinner! :D and many thanks for the tip on the free tram, it's so confusing to figure it out over the internet.

So you're staying at the Park Hyatt, and want a nice rooftop bar for a few quiet drinks? The rooftop at the Imperial Hotel would probably suit.

    Beautiful view over Parliament.

    • Thanks for the suggestion! will definitely check it out :D
