ISP for NBN in Narellan area (camden Sydney)

Im currently with DODO NBN on the 25 / 5 speed, over the last 3 months ive contacted them countless times about my low speeds and very annoying regular constant freezing/drop outs.
They only seem to rebot router or get me to change channels, i have 3 months left on contract and will not be renewing .
NBN box is located in the garage and data point and modem inside the house ( two stores) i also have a netgear wifi booster upstairs.
Can anyone help with suggestions on better reliable ISP or is there something i can do to improve it.
Thanks in advance

  • Boosters are shit.

    Some questions
    1) When downstairs (and not connected to the booster), it is still performing poorly?
    2) Do you have some form of network cabling?
    3) Are drop-outs time-out errors?
    4) Can you attach a laptop to the router by cable and see how it performs?

You might be able to use a powerline adapter to put a signal over power to your top level, and then put a second wifi access point on that.. Otherwise I had my house retrofit cabled by a local sparkie for about $800 (bearing in mind a single level only).

General comments. Dodo won't help you. Neither will any other ISP. Their responsibility is to get internet to your router (and will barely support their router if they supplied it). I am in the same area and NBN service (through TPG) is pretty good.

    • 1) Yes even with booster off and sitting opposite the modem on wifi i still have frezes.
      2) Not sure, new built house and cabling for NBN was done as part of it. I have box on outside wall, which feeds the hub in the Garage, then a cable runs through the roof to a data point where i plug modem in.
      3) Not sure what a time out error is?
      4) yes i can attach laptop to router, but dont very often as the data point is behind the TV unit and hard to get to with laptop i use WIFI for tables, phones and laptop.

You really want to try and avoid the booster. They cause all sorts of trouble. I would suggest that once your problem is resolved then find an alternate way of doing the signal upstairs. But having the booster off and not seeing any difference indicates that the booster isn't the (only) problem.

Seems like not then. All new houses come with some basic wiring to allow a fiber run, and sometimes a single point.

        3) Not sure what a time out error is?

That could be anything… ISP, wifi, or web in general.

For the purpose of testing, try and connect your laptop directly to the router with a network cable. See if that has any impact.

What you really need to do is find out which of the following is causing the problems:
        1) WiFi
        2) Poor ISP (they may be oversubscribed).
        3) Dodgy websites (and surfing a variety of websites and having the same problem indicates that this isn't the issue).

To test between 1 and 2, you really need to take WiFi out of the picture and show that the problem is still occurring (or not). If it's still occurring, then I'd be trying to change ISP (and I have good luck with TPG out there). If the problem resolves itself when not using WiFi then you can expect the WiFi to be a problem. This might be a warranty return for the router, or more likely investing in a better router (the ISP bundled ones are generally poor quality).
