Does It Cost Anything to Call Emergency Services?

Sorry I don't know where to put this topic and I don't know if this is a stupid question.

I know that there will be an ambulance fee charged for calling an ambulance but what about in the event of a fire and when you call the police? Do they charge a fee for their services?

There's a chicken shop downstairs from my work always setting off the fire alarm, when fire trucks arrive for a false alarm it costs them quite a bit in callout fees, $1500 is what i hear. They should learn to cook better…

    • thats pretty cheap , its a fire truck + how many people's time + risk that that that fire truck cant get to a real emergency

MFB charges about $500 for false alarms in 15 minute blocks from the time the truck leaves the fire house to the time they are back at the fire house.

Charge is per truck so if two attend the charge is doubled.

No there isn't but you should only call 000 if it's an actual emergency i.e. don't call 000 to make a noise complaint

I once lived at a student residence, their main smoke alarms would directly notify the fire brigade. If the alarm goes off and it is a false alarm i.e. there is no flames then its about $1500, but if there is an actual fire its free im pretty sure…

So if there's no fire start one to save $1500? Bargain!

Ambos cost around $1500 iirc. God help you if you're in a rural area and you need a chopper. That's in the 10k plus realm. Get an ambulance membership!

  • It is different in each state.

In Queensland the Ambulance is free if you are a permanent Queensland resident.
A false fire alarm for can cost about $1000 for a second or subsequent call out in a sixty day period.
It costs nothing to call the Police, but you can be charged with an offence if you make false complaints.

You're in Victoria so Ambulance can cost up to $1690 for road transport, fire brigade can charge $522 per 15 minutes per appliance for a false alarm, if the fire is real then your insurance will pay for it. The police don't charge for service, but you can be charged with an offence if you make false complaints.

    • It's not free in Queensland. We pay a compulsory levy on top of our electricity bill whether we use the ambulance or not.

  • My wife called the fire brigade once because she could see smoke from the neighbour's house. They arrived and it turned out the owners had had a BBQ and left the BBQ on while eating elsewhere in the house, and it caught fire.

But I wonder what would have happened if it was just smoke from a very smoky BBQ, and a neighbour calls the FB like we did - who would be liable for that false alarm?

If there is smoke it is cause for concern so I don't think they would charge anybody.

      • From what I know, smoke sets of many false fire alarms, and not necessarily considered a real fire. 'Flames' are considered real fires. Once when we were at a hotel, a faulty bread toaster gave smoke and set off a fire alarm. The fireman said there would be no charge (free) because he saw flames inside the bread toaster.
