Groupon Dentistry - How Safe Is It?

Hey,

So I'm probably going to need a crown in the near future, and I noticed on Groupon that a bunch of places offer porcelain crowns for ~$500 on groupon (with consultations etc included), which is about $1000 cheaper than what my dentist quoted me.

Seems a little too good to be true. Anyone had experience with these deals and know if these places are any good?

Thanks!

Google the individual dentists and look at the reviews.

Dentists are like mechanics, some are brilliant and honest, others are just plain bad.

Personally I wouldn't skimp on dentistry.

    • yeah, already done. problem is there are so few reviews. the dentists doing this are trying to build their customer base, i'd guess, which makes sense with the general lack of reviews.

As with all businesses, they've got to make money one way or another…

I'd almost compare it to bulk-bill only doctors and doctors who charge more than the medicare scheduled fee.

Bulk-bill doctors will make money based on volume so they'll be trying to rush everyone through as quickly as possible, whereas others may be willing to spend the extra few minutes diagnosing whatever problem someone may have.

I'm not sure how complicated "crowns" are or what the risks are like..

For simple matters, discounts aren't a bad thing… but for a little for more complicated procedures, I'd try get an idea as to what the typical charge is and go from there.

Be careful with these sorts of things too.. it may not be a once off charge like walking into a shop and buying something off the shelf.
It could easily turn out to be a situation where they ask you to keep coming back for lots of assessments at $X00.00 per assessment or boosting up the prices of certain other little things before actually performing the "discounted" procedure. In the end, the total price you end up paying might not be that far off what you'd normally pay. Worst case, it could even end up costing more depending on how they "work" this discount.

  • Your crown will most certainly be made overseas of inferior materials. Your Dentist will use TGA approved materials and a local laboratory who can assist with proper shade selection. You will get what you pay for.
