Issue in Canceling Aftermarket: Tinting and Paint Protection Accepted to Buy with New Car

Hello All,

I made a refundable deposit ($500) for the purchase of a new car from a dealer, after which I was approached by another person on aftermarket purchase like Paint Protection and window Tint. I agreed to go with the both and signed the invoice ($1400) .

While I am arranging my finance, I realised (after 5 days) that this paint protection is not worth it and window tinting by a third party turns out to be cheaper and also offers a similar lifetime warranty. So I called salesperson to cancel the both. However, the salesperson claims that window tint has already been applied to the new car. Even though I haven't paid anymore than (refundable) deposit for the car.

My questions are

  1. Does the dealer customise the car (applying Tint on windows) just based on refundable deposit made and signed Invoice of aftersales market?

  2. I requested for tax invoice for the car to get car loan organised.. does it commit the purchase of car? (Invoice mentions the VIN NO and ENG NO. )

  • Was the deposit only refundable for a reason like if you could not get finance?

    • Yes. I haven't made any arrangement on the finance when I was talking with Salesperson. He mentioned refundable many times during price negotiation and asked me to do the deposit so that I wouldn't miss the 2015 plate car.

      • But if you make a deposit, I assume you signed the contract to purchase the car and there likely would have been a clause that the deposit is only refundable under certain circumstances.

I don't see how you would be entitled to the $1400 back. You signed and authorized them to do the work. You possibly could get the $500 back and not buy the car.

At this point, I'd just take the car as it is. You may have a bit of money by getting the aftermarket stuff done elsewhere but at least it's more convenient this way.

  • I guess de facto answers are 1.No & 2.No. However it doesn't mean that they wouldn't deem you liable for signed $1400 invoice. Car dealers…

Fighting myself not to ask you: Why are you doing all this to yourself???

  • have a good look at whatever you signed with the salesman to see if it is binding or not. The problem with not having "refundable" in writing is salespeople get selective memory loss when it comes to you wanting to back out. Paint protection and tinting are never worth it when you guy a new car; that is the cream they get for you getting the car at a reasonable price. The same applies to extended warranty for most goods. Best of Luck.

Depends how much you paid for it, I got my car tinted at the dealer. It had air bubbles so I was able to get it re-done at the same time as my service interval so there was no stuffing around taking time off work just to do everything separately, and of course the life-time warranty. All in all it was only marginally more expensive than the 3rd parties, warranty that was very very easy to claim (no arguments), done together with your car's service and the whole thing is printed on the same contract as your car.

I would buy it again no question the next time I get another car if the experience is the same.

Depends how much you paid, ie how much they charged. Same product can be sold for about $400/450 up to like $895. If you paid $400 you'd be happier than if you paid $895 ;)

To the OP - you've got buyers remorse but sorry you shouldn't have accepted something and then tried to pull out later. This is called being an adult and taking responsibility.

Damn right they've gotten it ready because you ok-ed it all, and has been said already that you would've signed a contract.

If you sign something, know what you're signing or go back to primary school and start again

I agreed to go with the both and signed the invoice

Bought a used car that already had three windows tinted. Got a phone call from the dealer (a reputable German car company)just before it was ready for collection.

They offered me window tinting for $500. That's a big fat rip off. Two windows for $500.

It's just a standard up sell for car dealers.

They use third a third party business to do the tinting anyway.
Get it done somewhere else for my less $.

You should know this already but DO NO TRUST CAT DEALERS.
