SSD and Other General Computer Questions

Hi Guys,

Just wanting some general computer advice. My motherboard is around 4 years old - i have a gigabyte z68x-ud3r-b3.
Just wondering whether this supports SSD hard drives, as im looking to upgrade. Are there particular 'versions' of SSD that it does and doesn't support?

Also another general question, once i get a SSD, should i upgrade to windows 10?

I currently have windows 7 installed on my Hard disk… if it is a good idea to upgrade to windows 10, should i upgrade now on my normal hard disk and then make a copy of windows 10 to install in the new SSD, or should i install windows 7 on my SSD and then upgrade via the internet?

Thanks guys

  • Most SSD's have SATA 3 connections, which your motherboard supports, so that's fine. The other kinds of SSD's are based on M.2 or U.2 connections and look like thin sticks instead of normal drives, and that won't be compatible. SATA ones are cheaper anyway.

Unless you're really attached to Windows 7, you may as well upgrade. Doesn't really matter how.

the easiest way to find out if it supports SSDs is to go onto a "SSD finder" website.

I think corsair & kingston have one. You just enter your motherboard model

  • as above and update to win 10, then get ssd and do a transfer of the OS to that

i have the same MB and have a 120gb SSD C drive with lots of other drives to suit, even an old 30gb SSD that i use as a swap drive

make sure your bios is the latest version

My mobo is an 8yo gigabyte and i've had 3-4 different SSD's in it without any problems

Even a sata3 SSD on a sata2 mobo will make it a million times better than the conventional hdd could ever be

  • I was till a week ago was running a 6.5 year old build that I added a SSD to about a year ago so yes your mobo does support it and you will get a really good performance boost from the SSD.

If you can, I would recommend a fresh win 10 install on your new drive instead of trying to upgrade win 7 and that will also save you the hassle of migrating your OS and other personal files from the current drive. Just make sure you boot from the new SSD which is something that you can configure in the bios. good luck.

  • thanks all for your responses. i'll upgrade to windows 10 and keep my eyes out for a good SSD bargain!

    • Buy 2 x Blast 120GB from MSY, they are cheap enough (around $50), throw them in RAID 0, and enjoy flying with Windows 10. (always be backing up to your HDD, save nothing to your Windows drive)
