Woolworths/Optus Pixi 3 (4) Screen Resolution?

Posted this in Whirlpool but no response, so I'll try here as well.

Im thinking of picking up an Optus Pixi 3 (4) from Woolies as a cheapo media player for the kids, but cant seem to find a definitive answer on the screen resolution of this model. Its like $19 or something crazy and yes Im aware that its a very low end phone.

The Optus site is saying its 4.0" HVGA 320 x 480 pixels http://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaidmobile/alcatel/pixi%203

However the Optus model sold at Office Works is telling me its 4" WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) Display http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/optus-alcat…

Has anyone actually bought this phone at Woolies recently and can tell me what res the version is that they are selling? You can check the resolution with an app such as https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.screenreso…

It does appear from http://www.gsmarena.com/alcatel_pixi_3_(4)-6933.php that its 800x480 so perhaps Optus have it wrong?

  • I have the pixi 3(4.5) which is the higher version and the screen is terrible. My 3 year old Samsung S4 screen is a million times better. Buy it for internet radio like i did or a audio player or using it for calls only but DO NOT buy it for youtube, netflix etc.You will damage the kids eyes.

I'm very interested in this statement you're making. Do you have a link to the academic source or paper that correlates poor mobile phone screen size with optical damage in children?

It's true. I sat too close to the TV when I was a child and got square eyes just like my Mum said.
At least I got 4:3 format eyes. Kids these days will be suffering under 16:9 wide eyes.

Seriously, there is some limited evidence for increase myopia from excessive close vision work, but I do not believe there is any evidence that the clarity of the screen has any impact.

        • I always got told off for reading in the dark as a kid. Turns out everyone else in my family now wears glasses, I'm still 20/20. Eyes are muscles…make 'em work. However, if you are getting a head ache, maybe change phone or get off your phone!

As for the Pixi 4.0 screen, way better than it should be for $19 (even in bright light). As for the 4.5, couldn't tell you.

GPS is good. Compass not mentioned in the manual.

    • Yeah Ive read that the 4.5 has a poor screen too. Super AMOLED of the S4 is going to beat out TFT any day, my wife has an S2 and even way back then it was still an AMOLED screen… black is black. I dont personally think its going to effect the kids eyes, but colour variation across the screen in landscape orientation makes things look a bit odd at times on a low end TFT, kids probably wont notice though.

  • It’s a Pixi 3 (4), note the (4) because there is a 5” version with same specs just a larger screen – we’re getting the 4” version here in Australia. The Pixi 3 (4) has a 4” screen with 480×800 resolution, it’s a pretty standard specification at this end of the market – we’ll discuss the merits of this screen shortly.

learn to do some research (Google). It's not a hard question to answer.

    • Thanks for the reply, but I don't think you read my question properly (or just read the title only?)… as the Optus website is saying it's 4.0" HVGA 320 x 480 which conflicts with other sites so that is where the confusion is. I've been using the internet since about 1995 and as an ex web designer I know my way around Google pretty well now. :)

Have you purchased this particular model from Woolworths?

So if one site says x, and nine sites say y, how hard is it to conclude that one site is wrong?

Furthermore, 4" 320x480 is horrendous for this day and age, (and I linked a review for the exact model) AND you could contact Optus to confirm the specifications with you. You could even consult the manual.

OP highly lacking in resourcefulness and initiative IMO.

Don't really want to get in an argument with you over what is a simple question and request to owners of this model. Your comments are heading into personal attack territory for some reason.

Yes you can make conclusions and assumptions but that doesn't mean that conclusion is correct. Perhaps Optus have made a hardware change to the model to suit a price point. I agree it seems an odd resolution and that's why Im looking for first hand experience with this phone, it seems you don't have that experience and there is no need to continue talking down to me when I'm very capable of researching websites and reading manuals (Ive already been down this road). This situation calls for a different approach though given the information at hand.

In short, neither of us can be 100% sure of the answer at this point. I'm just in process of trying to confirm this with Optus now via their facebook page now that its business hours.

lol wow.. so polite aren't you?

gmail92 highly lacking in manners IMO.

To be honest why did you even help if you thought OP was so thick? If it was really that obvious you could've just said nothing and said to yourself "lol this OP is so dumb.. doesn't know how to google" yet you decided to "help"..

          @illumination:

I'm not here to be polite or rude, I'm here to provide my honest opinion.

        • @gmail92: Do you mean it is not possible to provide an honest opinion and either be rude and/or polite about it too?

learn to do some research (Google). It's not a hard question to answer.

and as if that wasn't enough…

OP highly lacking in resourcefulness and initiative IMO.

Clearly providing an honest opinion… but being rude at the same time. It is possible to be honest and rude, or honest and polite you know? Even, honest and neutral.

At 19 dollars per unit stop forking around buy 1, test using app mentioned and if its some magical high resolution, buy more or price match at Officeworks as you know what their resolution is supposed to be?

    • Nah I was hoping to exchange it for an unopened Vodaphone smart first phone as the pixi has front facing camera and compass apparently, and didnt want to end up with an even lower end screen. Besides, even if I was buying it with cash, $19 is $19 and if I can get an answer from someone with first hand experience with this phone then that is the better way to go.

  • It's a pretty good rugged phone. I bought one for my dad as an upgrade. It had a plastic touch screen so won't shatter when dropped. It's 800x480. Bought it from Harvey Norman, Optus locked.

    • Thanks for that, assuming that the Woolworths Optus one is the same then that is good news. Another user on Facebook optus group bought hers from HN and also said it is 800x480. Looks like Optus may have a problem with their specs page.

P.S.I thought this phone was a little slow until I Deleted / disable apps. Do this straight away. Also use the default browser or opera light or similar (not chrome). No lag any more. Lots of nice little extras built in.

  • *Note - no little pencil to edit contacts. You need to press the square button at the bottom when in contacts to bring up edit menu. This isn't written anywhere. Also, gave it to family to use. They haven't charged the battery for 5 days. That includes 3hrs of calls plus Internet use, plus setting it up. I thought the battery wouldnt last a day as it is only 1400mah

    • Yeah there are some odd little differences compared to the Vodaphone Smart first. Like can only add 4 icons to the hot seat at the bottom of the screen, whereas Smart first can have 5. Not sure if its possible to change that?

  • Ended up buying one from Officeworks instead as Woolworths had priced them back up to $49 or something today. OW still had them for $19.

Doesn't seem to have the compass sensor that I had read somewhere that it was meant to have, but not a big deal. Front facing camera and LED flash are the main differences to the Vodaphone Smart First, plus the interface is a bit different.

  • Bummer, Try Nova launcher to change the bottom buttons.

I have also been told you cant run the wifi while in Aeroplane mode. Apart from that, no complaints from family (other than not use the Chrome Browser).

    • Yeah I discovered the wifi/aeroplane mode issue in both the Pixi and also the Vodaphone Smart First. Seems you also cant turn on the FM radio or Bluetooth in flight mode. Not sure if cyanogenmod or something would get around that issue, but havent found any solution yet.

Had considered installing another launcher for the hot seat issue, but thanks for suggestion.
