Cheapest Balance/Rotation/Alignment

After a 3000km trip I noticed a faint shudder in my steering wheel, and when i started breaking a decent shudder there too, almost like the ABS going a grip/release/grip/release thing
or like there was air bubbles in the lines or something.

So I checked my tyres, and yup they are camber worn and down to the indicators . One tires was down to the belts on the far inside, almost as if it was on the inside tyre wall.

This had lead me to believe I need a balance. or an alignment, I'm actually not too sure what
but the problem is, I'm looking to get this car ready to sell, and I can't throw money at it (selling because money is tight)

Does anyone know cheap options for an alignment
or what the hell is going on when i break, is that wheel related or something else?

Thanks for your help!

  • it pretty standardly priced around $100 in WA. It takes around an hour to complete so unless you have a friend or uncle who's in the game you're probably not going to be able to get it for much less than that.

there's not much point getting it if the tyres are already gone. get some new tyres for the front and get an allignment with em.

Mmmm, interesting question. There are 74 different answers to this, as there are 73 different types of motor car front end suspension and steering design. Then there are 3187 different model cars on Australian roads, barring the exotic low volume and private imports and custom jobbies. Then it could be simples - wear and tear, worn single or multiple components, or possible a breakage and or damage. That opened a combination of possibilities as to how to proceed.

So, the only info we do not need/want is the cars colour, as yet this has no proven effect on tyres. Or……..?

All fun aside, as you are selling you will need a RWC, so grab an inspection now. This will give you an exact list of what is needed to correct your wobbles, and other faults to start to prepare your car for the selling process.

The shudders. Regardless of the mechanical reason, the worn tyres are the immediate cause. Why the tyres are worn is your true dilemma. Oh, and air bubbles are NOT the cause for a shudder. Pulling to one side etc, but not shudder. Out of balance will cause vibrations whilst driving, and or tyre flat spots but not complete around the tyre wear, as similar to failed shocks/struts flat spotted tyres.

When getting quotes for the repairs and tyres, ask for the Alignment to be thrown in if you are spending enough.
With most normal tyre outlets the balance is included(should be) in the FITTED price of the tyre, as is the new valve stem and environmental carcass disposal. Shop around with your list and all your vehicle details.

If the tyres are as bad as you say, it is very unsafe and as such consider immediate repairs and a tow truck for movements to effect repairs. At least throw your spare on the uber badly scrubbed corner. Remember, safety first.

Hope this helps you put this problem in solved box soon.
