Motorcycles [Kawasakie Ninja 250 (Rr) + Honda CBR/Night Hawk 250] + Clothing

Was thinking about purchasing a motorcycle, i'm finding it relatively hard to find motorcycles because they seem like an "exclusive" subculture of some sort (if i go to a dealer, most likely i'll get ripped off).

Anyways, was thinking about purchasing my first motorcycle. I had in mind:

  • Kawasaki Ninja 250rr or
  • Honda CBR 250 or CB Night Hawk 250

Anyone have and suggestions for first bikes (leaner friendly) & how much the above bikes would cost?

And how do i go about purchasing clothing & helmets?

Cheers.

P.S. any motorcycle tips would be good :)

  • you should really have a look at netrider.net.au mate :) they're a friendly bunch and they will help you out.

I dont know which part of sydney you are from, but they do 'beginner' rides around lane cove, and a few other areas in syd (plus intermediate and advanced rides too)

learner bikes are based on power to rate ratio, they used to be greater than 250cc, but now they have changed that. The suzuki gs500f is 550cc and learner legal.

If you dont already know, you need to do a learner licence course at a rider training school. its essentially 2 days where you do a few turns/low speed movements on a bike. they supply a bike. Then once you pass that + your bike test, you are given a learner license for 6 months. You must pass the Ps test within that period, or you must start again.

      • Things you will need to know to choose a bike - price you're willing to pay, the size of you (if you're 190cm cbr will be a squeeze) etc etc. anyway, see what netrider has to say.

        best wishes.

PS - if you go on netrider with specific questions, you'll get a much better responce than "i want to learn to ride, which bike?". They have heaps of FAQs etc so have a good read :)

  • The Honda generally holds it's value really well so it's often more expensive than the Ninja. Ninjas/GPX are decent for learner riders. Just check the usual to make sure it's fine (bodywork, fairings, brakes and history).

Obviously being a learner legal bike many have been thrown down the road. Both bikes are generally fairly reliable, I think the Ninja/GPX may be cheaper to run and get parts for.

  • +1

Thanks Davo111 & Kranbone for your reply,

As i'm typing, I am broswing netrider.net.au. Very good info especially for first time bike ridders.

I think I will go for the Ninja's, from your comment kranbone :)

  • You're thinking about 2nd hand right? Always get a 2nd hand learner bike that retains its value, because you'll sell it off after a year max anyway. CBR hold their value the best.

  • Ah yes, 2nd hand.

I have tried looking around auction sites (pickles & grays auction) but I haven't found any liquidation or solvency sales. I don't particularly trust ebay or private sales due to its high scaming nature.

How would I go about purchasing a 2nd hand bike?

(thanks for the tip zhenjie :))

  • There's nothing really wrong with listings on Netrider, TradingPost, Bike Sales or the Bike magazines you get from the stores. Scams from sellers aren't particularly a problem with second hand bikes. The only thing to look out for is badly repaired bikes or unroadworthy bikes. If you take the time to research, or better yet, have an inspection done on shortlisted bikes, you should be fine.

Don't wait for these solvency or liquidation sales, that's not the best way to find a bike.

  • if you do it right, you can get a nice bike (with minor scratches etc, you won't feel so bad when you drop it ;)). you can use it on your restrictions and then sell it for the same price or even a profit. Just make sure you get a good one. find a friend who knows bike or ask a netrider member to come along (throw in a slab for them and they will come ;)) there is a great guide for buying your first bike on NR look for it in the new riders section (it should be stickied)
