Gaming for Fitness

Hi everyone,

I want to get fitter. I have been an avid gamer in the past and now I am looking to reintroduce the addiction to this time bring benefit to my life - through physical activity gaming!

So I was wondering, what are the best games out there for working up a sweat? The most important question for me is - is the game LOTS of fun? I would rather a really fun game which exercises me at 70% than an average game that does 100% exercise (I was so bored by the Wii fit games). When it comes to exercise for me, if it's not fun then I won't keep doing it.

Platform doesn't matter at this point (I hope to buy a console after I have figured out which console has the best fitness games). So please, share your experience and thoughts with me!

Just Dance on PS4/Xbox? Works up a sweat and you can learn how to dance…

Or you could just buy a DDR machine like the ones in the arcade :)

I built a shelf for my computer over the top of my treadmill so I can walk whilst playing DOTA 2. It takes a while to get used too and I dont always use it, but it has little impact on my ability to pwn noobs. I can get through an entire 1 hour game whilst walking 5km and I dont even notice.

Find an angry dog in your neighbourhood. A real mean one that wants to take a chunk out of you just for walking by.

Taunt the dog. Show it that you're holding some meat. Open the gate, and run.

This is gaming at its finest - thrills, spills, adrenaline. Bring a friend and play co-op. And before you know it you'll have a heap of kms under your belt and a great all round workout.

Or you could try Zombies, Run! which is also a heap of fun and requires less tetanus shots.

    Ingress

I found ingress addictive when I worked in the CBD, then I moved work to somewhere more suburban and found it a bit creepy.

Some people get possessive about 'their' portals, and it becomes a bit like stalking. If you live/work near portals basically people can see tell when you leave work etc if you attack/link portals.

I would like something similarly location based, I saw a lot of new things I wouldn't have otherwise, but less emphasis on multiplayer. I hope games like this become more common.

Yeah I wish they had a less multiplayer game like ingress. I liked the exploring around for portals, but there are a lot of mental players who play that game, that's why I stopped playing

I have this game on my Xbox 360/Kinect — Kung-Fu High Impact. Basically you do lots of kicking, punching, ducking and jumping to defeat the baddies. It can really kill you after an hour or two.

  • Just go play squash. Not on the highway, in a squash court.

  • Wow, our generation is really something.

I'm game to try Pokémon GO when it's released. Gotta catch 'em all!
