7-Eleven App Lets Users Lock in Cheapest Petrol Price

Moved to Forum: Original Link

7-Eleven Australia has released a mobile application that allows motorists to ‘lock in’ the lowest price for fuel for up to seven days based on their location and near real-time fuel price data.
The app - designed to compete against fuel discounts offered by Coles and Woolworths - searches prices at outlets closest to the user, using the device's physical location. The app cannot be used without the device's location services turned on.
Once the app locates the lowest price, the customer can then register for a 7-Eleven digital wallet and select a voucher for the type and volume of fuel they would like to purchase, between 10 and 150 litres.

  • Great idea.. some places on the gold coast have out prices up by around 25c per litre today. That would save close to $15 on a full tank.

    App seems pretty straightforward too.

  • I wonder how well this will work in WA as we already have fuelwatch. I guess as it technically counts as a voucher it gets around those price rules?

This maybe worthwhile for ozbargainers to look at and comment on.

In summary This has some quite good features or am I reading it wrong

This is based on reading the T&C's found here

    http://www.7eleven.com.au/fuel-app-terms-and-conditions

    1. You need the app
    2. You need a reloadable 7 Eleven card with credit to the value that at least covers the value fuel you reserve
    3. You find the lowest local price and reserve litres of fuel at that price
    4. You have 7 days to avail yourself of this locked in price at ANY? 7 eleven, but you are not forced to use this price. and can redeem only one upto the reserved quantity
    5. When you collect your fuel, you can choose to use the held Card Balance, cash, eftpos or credit cards accepted by the 7-Eleven Store

Obviously by having to have current reloadable card with credit on it, you are in effect loanig the value to 7 Eleven, as when you spend that you cant get any more fuel reserved unless its topped up to the value but given my local 7 eleven has a price of 5cp/l higher than the one 15kms away (and is on par with local competition), it saves me having to travel to get the discount. And I am not forced to use this price if its cheaper when I get there.

Prices ae locked to the type of fuel I locked in with the app

  • I think the above is a good summary. Also, any money loaded onto the card may by used for non fuel purchases, e.g. slurpee, so that could be a useful away to use the credit if not used for fuel (I am sure that is what they are hoping as well).

So last night, I locked in the price of 93.9 in Melbourne. Fuel this morning at 7-11 and elsewhere for the most part locally is 124.9. With the cycles here now extending three weekly or so, for the motorist who fuels up weekly the price next week might be 116.9 or so. Therefore buying the fuel at the lowest end of the cycle even with no 4c discount voucher is worthwhile (providing 7-11 is convenient for you).

One pitfall I see with this is that the attendent has no idea what to do with the voucher. Then it becomes a hassle to save a few dollars. My partner told me not to do it "all your schemes from OzBargain are complicated and fail" …. we shall see.

    • I've heard that last line from my partner several times as well.. classic.

Isn't this just prepaid fuel with the convenience of utilising the best 7/11 store price in an 'x'km radius?

    • 100% I think, really only useful if you can lock in the lowest price just before prices go up.

although if you travel a bit, then my summation is that you can lock in the price say at your work location and fil up at home for the cheaper price

eg I can use it for the wifes car so she gets the cheaper fuel that I have access to. Better than filing fuel cans

I am sure some enterprising ozbers will have other advice on how to max the benefits

        • That could work. If you had family in country or less than competitive fuel areas you could lock in the cheaper price for them so they could fill up at the cheaper price. The app seems to let you login/logout with ease.

        • I guess if people were so inclined and had an android phone they could download a mock gps app.

But that would definitely be unethical

  • To much of a stuff around for me. I watch the terminal gate price to pick when the price is going to go up.

    http://www.aip.com.au/pricing/tgp/#ulp

Then take 4x20L gerry cans down in a little trailer and fill up the car as well - getting about 140L all up, just did it yesterday and payed 90.3c/L. Today the same servo is charging 125.9c/L so I saved about $50. This is enough to get me through to the next low in the cycle as predicted by the ACCC.

    https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/petrol-diesel-lpg/petrol-p…

I have never payed more than the terminal gate price.

      ROFL with your comments

To much of a stuff around for me

Then take 4x20L gerry cans down in a little trailer and fill up the car as well

      Why am I ROFL?

Go down to the car, drive out of garage, attach trailer, check lights all work, put in 4 Jerry cans - (which cost $25ea to buy), tie down Jerries, drive to servo, fill up car, open each Jerry and top up, drive home lift out Jerries, store in cool spot, and lift Jerry and pour into car when needed, watching I dont spill any on paint, have a hernia etc

vs open app, check prices load onto card and fill up when needed. If prices go down then skip using card and fill up. If goes up use card.

I guess we have different ideas on what is stuffing around. :)

As for terminal gate price, its a good marker and a good tip, but locally we had a price war and prices were lower than the TGP. And while TGP changed, upwards the Local price went down even further. I acknowedge that isnt the norm in most places.

BTW I do have 5 Jerries in my garage at present and that was my recent strategy, but I think if this app pans out I will be changing.

      • Yeah nah too much of a hassle. I wouldnt mind if they did a payment via paypal whatever but fees I guess.

There's too many independents in my area that undercut 7-11.

I considered buying some jerry cans and have some backup fuel, but they're like $25 for 20 L. Gotta be able to save up to $1.25/L to cover the cost.

      • get it from KMart, $20 for 20L and they have 2 opens, it make pouring easier.

  • Anyone can report where the cheapest petrol in Australia is right now?

I used to 'travel' to western sydney to get 94.9 but it has rocketed up to 124 now. Cheapest I can find is Port Macquarie and Newcastle at 100.9.
    Any luck elsewhere?

    • 97.7 cpl at some Caltex Woolworths across Perth today, cheapest at 7-11 is 99.9 today.

      • I just traveled to Perth and best price I could find was the Unleaded was 99.9 as you said at Rockingham. It said you guys don't have E10.

        • We do have E10 but it's not very common, 7-11 doesn't carry it.. I've only ever seen it at United.

        • @bonezAU: Every place does E10 here (except selected Woolies and Coles ventures). United does E85!

        • @xsacha:

I've never bought it because it's only 2c per litre less than normal unleaded. If they wanted more people to buy it they should consider selling it for less considering it burns faster.

Also just filled my car up for 95.9 cpl at a Coles express around the corner from work with 4cpl discount

        • @bonezAU: 109 is cheapest here so 7/11 is good!

can you tell me what app youre using when 'travelling', cheers.

      • Updates? 7-11 is aware of mock locations going by the updates section?

  • I am trying to login to the app. But I get error code golf.. Anyone had any issues?

    • I get the same error code, shit app…

God knows why that error is happening.

      • If you found any solution?

  • Can someone explain what happens if I lock in the price but then I choose not to pump at all that week? Would I get my credit back?

    • I'm sure you would.

      • That's correct, the credit is still available but you'll have to wait the 7 days for the lock to expire before you can place a new Price Lock or use the credit for in store purchases.

I've used it many times to lock in cheap fuel in the low cycles and even when you don't use up the entire amount of fuel locked in, the app works out the difference pretty much once the bar code is scanned on the app at the counter.

  • Has anyone ever used it?

No as straight forward as I would like it to be, however can be worthwhile when petrol jumps 20cents for no good reason.

Fortunately for me I do use the local 7/11 for fuel as Mobil 98 is a decent fuel.

I used to use it until someone hacked my account and started off by giving themselves a $10 fuel card. Noticed it straight away and removed card/changed password. Had a pretty good PW so unsure how this happened, both 7/11 and my bank are uninterested pursuing the matter as it was 'only $10' (bank will only chase $20+).

  • Anyone tried using two accounts on the one app/phone?

  • Digging up an old thread… fyi the app update wont allow it to work with rooted devices…
