Decent Affordable Phone Recommendations?

Hi, I'm looking to buy a phone this month as my iphone5 has gotten quite sluggish and end of its battery life. I know this is perfect timing to preorder Samsung s7 (VR looks mind blowing!) but the price is a little steep and I have no idea when to expect the actual product. I was considering Samsung s6 from Dick smith since they have 20% all phones atm but thought I'd tap into the wisdom of the ozbargain community to see you guys have better recommendations :) I'm on my phone quite a bit. Many thanks for any tips shared!

I'm on prepaid but happy to consider a plan. Will be using the phone until the end of its useful life - the pains of forever being a student…

  • If you are with Optus for internet/cable service, try calling them up and ask if they still have $10 off monthly fees for new mobile contracts. It also works for contracts with Vodafone, just tell them about Optus' offer and ask them to match the price. All my family members ended up getting new iphones $10 cheaper per month. I think my dad's contract is only $55/m for his iphone 6s 16g

    • Oh ok. I didn't know. Will pop by an Optus store and let you guys know if I manage to find a good deal. Thanks!

$180 Redmi note 2 if you do not want flashy and costly mobile phone…….

  • How much money do you want to spend? What are you looking for in a phone? Is it brand, performance, camera, battery life, or something else? Like S6 hold a good brand which has a good performance and camera quality, but it have really bad battery life. You will most likely need to charge the phone twice a day with light usage on 4g all day.

If that is suitable with your need, then get S6.

    • I don't mind charging but is the battery life around 2 years? Looking to spend around 350-600 but s6 is obviously a little higher than that atm but I'm internally justifying it for its brand

      • well if your moving from iPhone then waiting for some kind of s6 deal wouldn't be a bad move (no microSD support like iPhone). And yeah battery should last that long, if not longer.

Otherwise if you're looking for the best bang for buck it ain't with Samsung, grey import phones offer a lot better value (at the cost of missing out on more reliable and longer 2 years of local warranty) like that Redmi Note 2 mentioned earlier.

But yeah, need to know what you'd want in your next phone, like what planetandre asked.
