Getting around China blocking Gmail by forwarding emails.

My husband is going to China and most of his emails come to gmail accounts. If he has them auto-forwarded to big pond, will he be able to check his emails in China?

Thanks

  • That depends if China has blocked BigPond or not…

  • I'm 99% certain that he'll be able to access them as they're going through Gmail servers located outside of China into Bigpond.com which won't be blocked in China.

I always just use VPNs to get past the block and there are plenty of free ones that can do it.

    • We don't know anything about vpns, but o reckon this will work.

  • My friend who is an expat has his company provide him a VPN account, company pays for it. So if your hubby is an expat he can ask his managers / bosses to see if they can arrange for VPN account and put it as company expenses.

    • He owns the company….. He is leaving Friday so no time for us to get up to speed.

  • As Gmail is web based it shouldn't be a problem to receive email in Gmail as long as you have VPN to connect to Gmail web client (because emails are stored in the cloud), Bigpond on the other hand, isn't webmail and therefore device dependant, if China blocks Bigpond then you won't be able to get the emails forwarded from Gmail.

    • Yes and no. Some customers are still on the original Bigpond webmail and others are on Outlook.com through Bigpond.
