Getting into Round about or Passing Side Streets

Just curious.

What do most people do when other car gets into round about (on your left) or pulls out side street with speed and unsafe gap?

notice frequently nowadays more people try to beat one another getting into the round about.

TRY not to let it faze me, sometimes it does. just depends on the stupidity level.

and, roundabouts are good fun, so I get it if someone is fanging thru.

My first priority is always not being in an accident. If that means ceding right-of-way to someone who thinks its 'cool' to go haring around a roundabout, whatever. Me honking at them isn't going to change their behaviour, just have to wait till they grow up or get booked.

Not to say dangerous behaviour doesn't annoy or sometimes scare me (hello person driving the wrong way down a divided road… GTFO).

    • Agree, as a pedestrian, driver and sometimes cyclists. Right of way means shit to me when "at fault" drivers can easily change your life for the worse in a way that cannot be pegged to any monetary value. Even then, the additional time and trouble caused is definitely not worth it.

Reminds me of some time I spent in China. Using the roads as a pedestrian or driver is like playing a game of chicken, even if you have the right of way you could get killed or wrecked if you were not careful or just unlucky. I'd much rather be the chicken who is well and alive with just a couple minutes of delay.

Just got rear-ended by somebody couple of months ago. Was turning right into a side street. Driver did not even slow down (likely using phone or something). There are idiots everywhere.

When ceding the right of way I don't even bother to sound the horn anymore (what does it do? Punish the guy, make you feel better or both?). I am always ready to slow down when I see cars approaching a junction or the round about. All it takes is one idiot to ruin your day. Right-of-way just makes sure you are compensated according to the law (it won't repay you for the trouble/time/ruined day).

Your definition of "unsafe gap" could well be well inside my/others definition of "safe gap".

Sounds like it's a 2 lane roundabout.. and it's perfectly acceptable (and safe) for a car to enter the left lane of the roundabout while you're in the right…

    • can't find a perfect photo but example like this.
The other car does not apparently slow down or only stop till right on the line. Sometimes sticks a bit of the nose out when you are about to pass.

      • I actually had a smash like this a few years ago after getting my car cleaned. I was driving home, took a left at a green light, and about 10m ahead of that corner was this pretty woman sitting on the driveway to a store. As I got closer she decided to roll out in front of me after sitting stationary. I swerved, but still smashed half of the front of my car into hers.

She immediately got out panicking and apologising, that is until the white knight showed up.

A guy came out of the store and decided to defend her saying he saw me speeding around the corner… In the heavy rain. With a front wheel drive car. 10m to accelerate from point of 90 degree turn to the driveway. Luckily another guy came up to me and said that was bullshit and he saw the whole thing.

In the end the insurance took her to court as she didn't have her own insurance, and then they couldn't get the money back from her for the 5k~ repair bill. So they DOUBLED my premium the next renewal as they had a monopoly on my age and car choice (Just Car Insurance)…

My understanding of current road rules is that you must give way to any vehicle who is already in the round-about.
This means that there is a positive advantage to 'get there first'.
So, if you have a problem with people rushing to beat someone else into the round-about - blame the government who has created the situation.

    • that's right, the old rule was give way to your right and some people mainly older drivers may still do this but now it's mad dash to get into the roundabout first, you can tell because they don't touch the brakes as they approach! what was wrong with the old rule?

      • It's still Give Way to the Right…
If a vehicle is already on the roundabout and it's to your right then you have to give way, if it's already on the roundabout to your left you don't care and you don't need to Give Way to them.

If you both arrive at the roundabout at the same time, you ought to be able to enter at the same time and not interfere with each other unless it's a tiny roundabout, in which case Give Way to Your Right.

makes sense although the 2015 RMS handbook still has "Approaching a roundabout:Vehicles entering a roundabout must give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout." technically the handbook says you must give way even if the other driver has passed you and is on your left!

        • If you both arrive at the roundabout at the same time, you ought to be able to enter at the same time and not interfere with each other

It is true when both cars travel at the same speed. When the right car is as determined to get in round about first, It becomes "who dares win".

If the guys on the left accelerates every time, the right car is most likely to hit the left car's mid way or behind. In which case, right car becomes at fault under the new rule.

I choose to give way every time not because It is is not worth to have an accident.

But there is exception when crazy left car still wants to get in even when you are already in the roundabout, ie you may have to brake to avoid left car and accident, otherwise risk to hit the back section of the left car. (which you may be at fault). Found the left driver is more likely to slow down when angle your car towards the other car's front panel or driver's door.

        • @morpheu:
Which by default you've already done unless they're reversing through or entering anticlockwise… In which case they'd have been breaking the law prior to the accident and would still be held at fault.

          @eatwell365:

If you hit a car in the side, then they're still entering the roundabout, cause part of their car is off the roundabout and therefore not "on" the roundabout.
If you hit them from behind, then you've either entered the roundabout too quickly, or not been paying sufficient attention to slow down.
If you almost hit them, or have to brake hard, then they've failed to Give Way to their right and I'd be giving them a polite horn blast to let them know their a sh!t/inconsiderate driver.
