Prepaid Data for New Zealand

A relative is going to New Zealand soon and she has a Samsung tablet and she wants data for it.
I purchased a prepaid $30 Optus sim for data, it was only $10. Will this work in New Zealand? Online it says for use in Australia only. but they could just be pushing their Optus Travel.
If not, what's another option?

From past OB deals, www.travelsimsdirect.com has 1gb for $29

  • There are a couple of kiosks at the airport (Auckland) that offer cheap data for tourists. That's what I've used in the past. Pretty sure purchasing anything from here beforehand would work out more expensive than just getting something on arrival.

  • I'm also going to NZ soon and have been doing some research :P

If you're only going to do light browsing:

    Get this delivered for free

    Then get this $9 for 1 GB/1 month or $3 for 100 MB/7 days

Not sure if you can pick a data SIM up for free in store, or if the offer is only available online. Secondly, not sure if the extras pack works without buying a $19 "value pack".

Or alternatively 2degrees offer free SIM cards at the airport — at JR duty free, car rental kiosks and the information counter.

The IOU pack is $3 for 50 MB if you just need to check the weather, news, directions etc.

Most of their plans from the big three i.e. Vodafone, Spark and 2degrees offer $19 a month plans and come with 500 MB of data and some texts/calls, some can also work with Oz numbers. The Spark plan looks good as they give you a Spotify premium subscription and 2 GB/day wifi hotspot as well.

And finally, you can get Vodafone's $5 roaming plan (which is actually free in NZ) to use your Oz data. So if you can find a cheap Red SIM or cheap recharge you can potentially get $40/3 GB or $50/10 GB for a lot less.

    • Wow thanks, she'll want it before hand because she's just like that.

    • Just bumping this thread as I'm interested in the Vodafone $5 roaming offer. Is it possible to just buy a cheap voda sim (e.g one bought from supermarkets) on a prepaid plan and use the roaming service for NZ provided there's credit?

      • afaik no; it's only the "Red" plans that allow you to roam for free in NZ (no need $5/day), which is a contract plan.
