Alcatel Pixi 3 4.0 GPS offline, does it work?

Hi all,
Just wondering if the GPS should work in offline mode in Here Maps or Polaris? It works with data turned on, but no luck with just the GPS turned on. Tried over several days, not a cloud in the sky tonight..think ive got a dud?

  • Install GPS status on the phone
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.g…

use the app to download the latest A-GPS data

ensure that you have a clear view of the sky

If it doesn't work you probably just have a phone with a dodgy GPS.

  • Cheers mate.

  • App says there is a GPS present, but after 25 miniutes on an open cloud free day it didn't lock on…must be stuffed.

Anyone else got a Pixi and can confirm their GPS works (offline mode), ie not data assisted.

  • No satellites appearing in my Pixi 3 (4) either within GPS Toolkit. Have you installed a SIM in your phone as yet?? I havent yet and I wonder if this is why? Perhaps it needs to get a fix on whether you are located in northern or southern hemisphere via cells towers before it knows your general location.

  • I dont suppose you had a play with turning radios off with a code that you type into the phone keypad?? I did this a few days ago to try to get wifi working whilst cell was disabled (like flight mode but with wifi active). It didnt seem to do anything when I clicked the option to disable radios, but now wondering if it did actually disable the GPS?

Edit: the code I used to try to disable radios was as follows although it seemed to do nothing when I pressed the button to "turn off radio".

    "
    Go into phone dialer
    Enter; ##4636##
    Go to phone information
Scroll down to turn off radio
    Enable and exit"

I have also installed a couple of apps that were meant to disable radios over the last few days. Have you done the same by any chance?

  • It has had an active Optus sim for 2 weeks. I haven't tried any of that radio off stuff, so it's not the cause.
I also tried the GPS with all Location features turned on (ie data) and it does work, but is out by approx. 800m!

I have also read the Pixi 4.5 version GPS does work in offline GPS mode, so it seems there may be a fault in the Pixi 3 4.0.

Unfortunately for me, the offline GPS is crucial as it used for finding boating locations etc and needs to be accurate within 10m or so. So it looks like this will need to go back as it isn't fit for purpose (and hopefully the Pixi 4.5's go cheap again at Woolies and i'll swap it for that (they were $69 on Tuesday, not sure how much they are in this weeks cycle?).

    • Its bizarre that it is happening to both of us (I ended up buying mine from Officeworks, not woolies), given that I cant find any other references to the issue online, although I didnt search for long.

The offline GPS on my Vodaphone Smart First 6 does work in offline, and its essentially the same phone bar a few things.

The GPS being out by 800m probably means its just using triangulation data from cell towers instead of GPS sat.

  • Yeah, disappointing. Everything else about the phone was pretty good once you get it set up right and put an SD Card in it.

  • +1

It does work, but it takes a really long time to lock onto the Satellites for some reason, even longer than the Huawei Y550.

The 4.5 Inch locks on faster though for some reason. o_O.

You can try to set display to turn off after 10 minutes and leave the map program open. I notice that every time the screen turns off, it seems to cut it off, and if I try to turn it on again, it hasn't locked on yet. The same problem I have seen on the Y550. i.e. Must be kept it in locking on mode otherwise it just fails.

    • Yep,you nailed it. With sleep mode set for 10mins it picked up 1 satellite after 2 minutes and was functioning after 3mins. Still ages, but at least it works.

  • Cheers Ponyhearts. I will try that.

Just an FYI. I previously had a Y550 and it was the best GPS I ever had. It locked on in seconds all over the world. Even on a bus in pouring rain and thick cloud in Thailand. Maybe variations in quality.

    • My Y550 has a GPS bug where it randomly loses fix, quite a few have the same bug it seems.

  • does anyone know which antenna is the GPS antenna? I assume the largest one at the top is the cell, but not sure which of the other two is GPS, Im thinking that maybe they arent making contact with the circuit board, may pull mine apart to see. One of the small antennas at the top you can easily see the contact points and I tried pushing a couple of toothpicks in to help make contact but no difference. So Im guessing it may be the one at the bottom of the phone that is for the GPS.

I tried the screen timeout thing, and it does start to see satellites in GPS Toolkit after a while but none of them turn green, just very short grey bars.

  • With cheap Android mobile phones, I found them work much better if you plugs in the charger while using the GPS. Once I noticed that, I haven't had any problem with losing GPS locks. You can try using a car charger while driving. If you are walking, perhaps buy a power bank. I also noticed that I need to connect my Android phones (which I don't have mobile data connections, and usually turn off wifi to save battery) to wifi once in a while for the system to updates, and it always get GPS locks quickly. I am using a Huawei Y550 and a ZTE Buzz.
