Buying Demo Car - vehicle is registered per RMS, but VIN search on PPSR shows no vehicles found?

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can advise on the following situation. I am interested in buying a 6 month-old demo vehicle from a dealer. When I search the registration (NSW) on the RMS website, the vehicle is currently registered and insured (CTP), but when I search the VIN number on PPSR, the report says that NEVDIS reports "no vehicles found". The car is European and would have been imported. I have double-checked that the VIN is correct.
Is this just a matter of sorting out paperwork for this vehicle, or is something more suspicious going on? The vehicle is currently registered, so I am not sure what to make of this.

Thanks for your advice.

  • https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/vins.aspx has relevant information re VINs not in NEVDIS…..

    • Decoding this for the OP means without the VIN the car cannot be registered. In this case the car is registered so its like airzone (below) says the PPSR doesnt have it encumbered

  • PPSR is something that registers interest / encumbrances on property.. e.g. if there is secured finance against it. Not having a record will mean that it's clean.

    • PPSR consolidated many registers, and while it is predominantly about security interests, it also now reveals NEVDIS data, which isn't about security interests.

Even a car with no security interests should show a result in NEVDIS when searching by VIN.

  • Thank you everyone for your replies. My concern is that the VIN is not showing up on NEVDIS even though the vehicle is registered. Doesn't make sense to me. I will investigate further with RMS and see if there are any issues.
