What Do You Think - Odd Futu Online / eBay Power Board Photo?

I'm thinking of getting two of these power boards during the CTECHIE 20% off sale, but…

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Eaton-Standby-Powerboard-UPS-Powe…

If you mouse over the photos, one shows normal plug ports & the other shows, well…the kind I haven't seen in a long while…I figure the deal will be over before I get an answer from futu.

Anyone here bought this or know about it?

Cheers

all over the description says "6 Australian outlets" etc.
doubt you would get the female IEC "Kettle Cord" version.

description would give grounds for a dispute if arrived as Kettle Cord type.

  • Agreed.

Except the 700 is $1 less than the 550?

They also have a battery-backup unit that covers 330…

I'm trying to get one for my home office & also another one for my TV/AVR/PS3/Blu-ray. I don't have much running simultaneously. Basic tower/monitor/speakers. TV/AVR/BR or PS3.

Any of these ought to do the job, from what I can glean online, yeah?

    Ta!

Didn't look much further, assume it'll be similar elsewhere.

    • Batteries can be cheaper when on semi-regular promo in Jaycar. Brands all much of a muchness these days - lousy, but decent turnover ensures fresh stock, which is very important given battery-type.

Two older Eaton units of same VA rating in the house, back from when each cost about twice the price you're looking at. They have both lasted and been useful.

That said, I tend not to reward manufacturers that give much of any grief. The 'new appliance smell' of two bought was so overwhelming/sustained that they both ended up running at the end of very long extension cords. Couldn't be bothered at the time to return/complain, but outcome of purchase not exactly ideal…

Quality/doping of circuit boards and charger components may well have changed (sure as hell needed to), but I will opt for other brands of UPS, next time. Unfamiliar with any specific or similar issues relating to any of the other brands available still & now, but would certainly like to know.

Experience is that batteries (all smaller gel cells made in China for a long time now), last only about two years before they will hit cut-off voltage very quickly - with even a very small current-draw through the UPS.

Change preemptively, if you don't want, or can't risk, a nasty surprise.

      • Ok, that being said re: opinion of brand (ta)- would you (if in the market for these) buy the UPS or the standard surge shown here?

        • 'Standby' is the most basic form of UPS. If you don't need the extra current-headroom, and you may not, go with the 550 VA 'line-interactive' one (literally, one) immediately below main listing. You mentioned it above. Google will assist in understanding the difference between those two, if you haven't already gathered.

I should stress that no equipment has failed in my house when operating on square-wave inverter power. Regardless of that, I'll be opting for pure sine-wave UPS units next time around, despite much more expensive upfront and running costs, and even if not really necessary.

By way of most modern power-supply design, most electronic equipment is pretty forgiving of dirty power, so don't stress in buying any of the ones you're considering.

Buy long extension cord, though, just in case really bad new appliance fumes!
