Is There a Way to Withdraw Cash in AUD from a US Prepaid VISA Card?

Hi All

Bought a US unlocked Visa prepaid credit card recently, loaded it with $800 USD ($1150 AUD) with the intent of buying a projector online that was on sale.

Vendor accepted payment then cancelled my order citing a rule it refuses to ship to freight forwarders.

I now no longer want the projector as the sale has ended but am stuck with a preloaded card in the US as usunlocked does not return monies.

Does anybody have a way of me cashing this out and getting most of my money back in my Aus bank a/c?

You could try and sell it in the Classified section.

    Other ideas:

    • Pay for an item locally, refund it and tell them that the card you paid with is a pre-paid non reloadable card or a cancelled card (i.e. they'd be forced to give the money to you in AUD on another card or by cash).
    • Find a gambling site that allows you to use card as a method to top up your account balance - some don't accept "credit" cards or will have them charged as cash advance, but given yours is prepaid I'm not sure how this would be calculated
    • Save it for a time that you'd be going to the US? Seeing the way the dollar is headed at the moment (IMO a short term rise though, but I am no expert whatsoever) you'd probably prefer to get rid of it sooner rather than later to maximise your AUD return
    • If you often buy some of the items here on Ozbargain charged in USD you could use them on those
    • Put the money into a PayPal account and withdraw it out? Don't have experience doing this and not sure how it works, but just an idea.

In all cases, you'd probably want to find out what kind of fees the card has for international transactions because they will probably have fees

Also.. I've always been curious about the word "monies". What's the origin of this word? I have seen it used several times, often in a more formal context, but it's not a word I ever learnt in school growing up.. it was always "money".

  • get a coles reloadable mastercard. load your USD prepaid card into it. cash it out for free at coles express ATM.

  • Thanks illumination some great tips.

The us unlocked card is only for us websites I am told.

Sorry hal9000, can't see how it would be possible to load USD prepaid card onto it? Do you have a link where it explains this process?

    • You can recharge it with a credit card. But check the fees for international transactions

    • if it's a prepaid card, i assume it will be treated like a debit one really.

What exchange rate are you looking at? $800 USD is $1050 AUD.

Otherwise there have been quite a few recent Amazon deals so it could be useful to have.

  • Us unlocked (the company) slugs you with about .04c on their exchange rate. Not fantastic but it does open the option of buying from all US websites.

In my case, its just the vendor refused to ship to freight forwarder.
