Cannot Enrol into Local High School

Hi All,

We recently moved to an new area and tried to enroll our girl into local High school.
Unfortunately the school is full and we were told to be on the waiting list.

The school year 7 is capped at 200 students, and they can not take any more students until some kids move out of the school etc.
So it means we may have to wait for several years until our daughter can get in ie year 9 , 10 or 11.

The local school is only 10 minutes walk from our house whereas the other school is 50 minutes by train and bus or 20 min by Car.

The issues is my daughter was in a car accident when she was younger and she is scared of travelling in car now.

Can we write to the local MP or Education Department or Minister of Education?
M partner does not like taking EXTREME measures!

Any advice or suggestions are very much appreciated.
Thanks

Feel free to write to your local MP/state education department/minister for education - can't see what good it would do though.

As far as your daughter being scared of travelling in cars - car travel is kind of a big deal in 2016, you should probably work to get over that fear.

You didn't really provide much info otherwise. Public/private school. The state you're in. Is it really the case that there's a high school 10 mins walk, yet nothing else closer than a 20 minute drive? I'm not saying that's not the case, but I find that hard to believe.

And please don't take any of the above the wrong way. But you have resorted to an online bargain website to ask for this kind of advice.

Maybe you need to get her some medical help to get past this. At some point she will have to get back in a car…

As someone else said are there really no other schools?

why haven't you addressed your daughters car phobia already?

I was under the impression that a State school was required to take any students who lived in the correct zone, regardless of number of children already enrolled. Being a State school the govenrnment would then fund the required number of students and teachers required. I guess the rules change from state to state.

    • Depends on the school - some are capped with enrolments and others aren't. Some have zoning and some don't.

What state are you in? Here in inner city Melbourne, our local primary school just kept popping up double storey 'portable' class rooms on the school playground/oval to accommodate extra kids.

  • Public or Private?

    • and what state are you in?

In NSW if you are zoned for a public school they have to take you. Is it possible the school is the closest, but you are zoned for a different one?

      From NSW Education website:
      "Finding a school
Each NSW public school has a defined local enrolment area. This means that your child is designated to a particular school based on the permanent residential address of the primary caregiver. Every public school reserves enough places within their school for students in their local enrolment area"

Private school can do whatever they like, and would most likely have capped numbers.

  • we are in NSW.
we are in the zone but because of the heritage building the school is capped and
they not allow to built or add in demountable building like others.

    • Worth contacting the education dept then. But before you do find out as much as you can about their policies. "Every public school reserves enough places…" Sounds like it means they have to let you in, so read the fine print then make your stand.
