What to Look for in a General Day-to-Day Men's Bag/Satchel? (Deadline: 24th March)

I need a bag and I need to pay for it before the 24th (that's when my 10% eBay coupon ends!).

At the moment, my only requirement is it has to be a shoulder strap bag (not backpack). Laptop etc specific bags are not needed. This bag will be used everyday for years until it breaks down.

I don't know what my budget is but I'm not looking for something cheap. At the same time, I'm definitely not interested in whatever is the "Apple iPhone" of men's bags. I'm fine paying for quality but I have my limits. In short, what are the Sony/Samsung of men's bags?

I sorted by price (high to low) on eBay, and the top three most expensive are L[redacted] V[redacted], P[redacted], and D[redacted] so I'll probably avoid those ones. I feel like a rube (thanks OzBargainer who likes to say words like "rube" and "gummint", this is the first time I've used that word in a sentence) even contemplating typing out their brand/company names.

  • Tumi

    • Any particular reason why you recommend this brand?
Why do you think they are worth the $250+?

      • I have a Tumi commuter brief similar to this given to me by my dad 2 years ago. I use it to work daily, and it has held up very well.

My dad has one of their backpack and he loves it. He travels a lot (approximately every fortnight), and he's quite rough with it. Still looks brand new to me!

I'm not too sure how they would compare to other brands though as I don't have much experience with a lot of brands. I've used Samsonite backpacks in the past and they've held up well. I've used Hershel backpacks as well, and to me they're not great, just okay.

  • I have one of these if you want, I'd be ok to sell it for $50. It's missing the internal padded divider though.

    • I tried to find clear pics of it but I couldn't but does it have any outside pockets (front, back, side) and how many? Also, do you use eBay?

      • I've private messaged you…

  • Crumpler.

    • Excellent Quality

    • Lifetime warranty

    • They look awesome

Yes they are expensive but I'd say it's worth it.

  • I have a Filson Briefcase which is something of a cliche, but it's served me well. It's a bit aged and I've waxed it a couple times, so it has a nice patina going. Decent storage, but my main complaint is the stiff zipper up top (can potentially scratch things like my rMBP).

  • Hedgren, had one for years. Come in a large range of sizes, there is a couple on eBay that will accommodate a laptop.

  • Leaning towards Hedgren messenger bags at the moment because:

They're not expensive (ones I'm looking at are $100 or so).
The design is decent and subtle (but not attention drawing) and I won't look out of place anywhere I go.
No clip-on zip lock things nor belts.
    Waterproof(ish).

  • Have a look at this site - http://www.bagworld.com.au/shop/listings/business-computer-c…

I purchased my latest work bag here recently (High Sierra 17" laptop messenger bag) and so far I'm really happy with it.
Prices are pretty decent too for some reputable brands like American Tourister, Antler etc. Crumpler bags are good, but I can't justify the prices on those things.

  • Moshi Venturo Backpack is decent.
