Projector with Fixed Screen and Sound

Recently purchased a 55" sony TV of the ctechie deal but after a week it still hasn't been sent and I'm thinking about cancelling. I'm interested in getting a projector and fixed screen. Haven't seen any deals on here.
Im looking to spend max $1000. Seating is approx 3.5m from wall. As is rental I would prob put projector on coffee table shelf approx 2.5m from wall. How heavy are fixed screens. Would a heap of those 3m strips do the trick to hold it up. Not too fussed on 3d thinking bout just hooking up Chromecast for Netflix (I don't watch much TV).

Also I suppose I would need a sound system. Suggestions for something wireless? Is it a possibility?

Thanks for any help

Videopro are having a sale this Saturday. I posted a deal for it but some items need clarifying. They seem to have some pretty competitive prices for some items.

  • Tight budget for PJ AND screen.
It's a tight budget for just a PJ!
If the wall is flat and white/cream, just project onto that.

2.5m projection distance will probably restrict you to short throw models, or a small projection.

Use the Projector Calculator here to work out the screen size you'll get at that projection distance.

  • For under $1000 the leading projectors in this class would either be the BenQ W1070 or the Epson TW5200. I would go with the Epson since the bulbs are three times less expensive. Last time I looked it was only $99. For the size of your room you wouldn't want a screen bigger than 100 inches.

  • Thanks for your replies. If this videopro has 30% off on Saturday i may be able to pick up a Epson TW5300 for around $700.
It is just a white flat wall im projecting on to so mite hold off on the screen and just see how it goes (does it make much of a difference iyo?
Also as for sound I was thinking of just getting a bluetooth trasmitter to plug into the mini-jack stereo audio out (is 'mini-jack just 3.5mm) and connect to a bluetooth sound bar. Mainly to minimalise cables. do you think this would work ok?

    • I think a white wall will suffice until you get a screen but once you do, the difference is immediate.

Check out this package deal from Selby - http://www.selby.com.au/epson-eh-tw8200-home-theatre-project…. It's above your budget but it's a pretty good deal. That bracket is awesome and I've read good things about their screens.

Ultimately you'll want a receiver to hook up all your audio visuals. Costco right now is selling the Klipsch HD Theater 600 speakers with a Pioneer AV receiver for $999. Those speakers are great, I can't comment on the receiver though.

    • I've been projecting onto a wall for years and never had a complaint.

      Bluetooth audio is shite!
Why would you spend $700 on a PJ to have an awesome cinema experience in your home and then deflate that experience listening to crappy compressed sound?

What source will you be using into the projector and therefore into the speakers?
Since you're putting the PJ on a coffee table, I'd be buying a long audio cable (with suitable connectors to plug into the soundbar or even better into an existing amplifier/speakers setup.
Roll it up when you're not using the PJ.

Ideally you should be aiming to have a proper Amp with surround sound.
Easy to pick up a secondhand non-HDMI unit with a set of speakers for less than $200 on Gumtree.

      • Thanks. I was actually thinking about just plugging a chromecast into the projector. I really only watch a bit of netflix and maybe some other online content. So Im a bit confused with the audio. audio will go via chromecast so then should i use audio out from projector. this is just a 3.5mm jack so is that ok to use to sound bar? obviously not ideal i imagine. Or should i just go sound straight from laptop/phone or whatever device im casting from. Again, this is only going to be 3.5mm.

        Thanks

        • Barest minimum I'd be using a cable to the Soundbar.
It'll sound far better than BT audio and be cheaper!

If the soundbar has optical or Coaxial Digital, you might be able to hook up a Set top box or Blu-Ray (use the USB port to play files) to the PJ and then optical/coaxial out to the Soundbar, then down the track, upgrade to a Proper AMP and speakers for surround sound.

    • How do we know when Video Pro Gonna have a next sale going on?
