Coles Prepaid ZTE Chat 4G Internal Memory

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has bought this phone and can help me out. It's in the Coles catalogue this week reduced to $79. All my online research leads me to believe it has approx 4gb internal memory available. Had a look at the box today and it says 5GB on it….presumably that's the total storage rather than what is available? Hoping someone has bought this and knows how much internal storage is available. Thanks in advance!

  • You can contact Optus and ask them. Try searching on Whirlpool.

If it says 5GB of storage available on the box, that likely means it does have 8GB total, but due to the OS taking up some of the space, only 5GB is partitioned as user accessible storage. The other 3 gigabytes is reserved for applications and Android itself.

I would probably expect no more than 1.5GB of storage for apps (which is not very generous, but decent for a sub $100 device).

    • Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping there's 5GB available and the box is trying to be helpful! I'll give optus a go. Hoping that someone here had bought one and could confirm the available storage. Thanks again.

      • Happy to be wrong for your sake, but I'll lay odds that you'll have just a couple GB's overall to work with. Box blurb sounds like clueless and dodgy marketing, adding up ROM and '512' MB of RAM and then rounding up…

        • Thanks for the reply. Find the fact that it's 5GB a bit weird as normally storage is 4GB, 8GB, 16Gb etc. Hopefully someone has bought this phone and can confirm either way!

        • @calkay: I just checked an old 4GB Android. 'Total Space' under internal storage reports as 2.21GB, 1.2 for apps, 1GB available to user for other. Partitioned space varies phone to phone, but that'll roughly be what you're looking at. If planning to use as actual daily phone, just for extra app space alone maybe try for an '8'GB model. 1GB or more of RAM is also very useful and reduces app crashes.

        • Thanks for the reply. This is what is confusing me as according to zte its 8gb which would be ok but according to the box it's 5gb. So if that's what I can use then awesome….but if it's the total space then not so good!

        • @calkay: When you say 'according to zte' what do you mean? This looks very clear for 4GB storage http://www.ztemobiles.com.au/V830W.htm Just clicked specs tab on that page and shows further.

Optus ZTE Fit http://ausdroid.net/2015/05/18/zte-optus-fit-4g-smart-review… has specs I mentioned above. Maybe as cheap as previous deals on Ozbargain if you can wait or find good deal now. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/zte+fit Otherwise for just a bit more than $79 without any deal.

Some of the cheap Alcatel phones around also have some better specs than the Chat. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/alcatel+pixi

        • Hi,
Thanks again. I'll have a look at the other phones above. The one I think Coles are selling for $79 is http://www.ztemobiles.com.au/Chat4G.htm which seems to be 8GB internal with approx. 4GB for my use. That's why I'm confused by the box - can't work out where the 5GB come from! Did ask the staff member but as they're not really mobile providers they could only go by what was on the box.

        • @calkay: I see. I assumed that you'd left a 'B' off in the title… Two very different 'Chat' models, one just with 3G connectivity and one with 4G…

No mention of RAM in that link, but probably 1GB. A reasonable gamble and also a bigger screen than the Fit. Ignore the '5G' business. Total internal available stated as 4GB, but you may have about 4.5GB in total to work with.

          Enjoy your new phone!

        • Thanks for all the help. If I do get it I'll post on here what it ends up actually being in terms of internal memory! Thanks again

  • Hi, Bought the phone today. The box underneath the Coles packaging said it was the 8gb model so no idea what the 5GB was about!!!

    • 5GB would be the usable storage after overhead (O/S, cache partition etc)

      • Can't remember the exact amount of usable internal storage available as it's my sons phone but I think he said it was 4.1GB…..think Coles just made up a random number to confuse people or alternatively they made a mistake which has wasted a lot of time for me and others trying to work out what they are talking about! On another note my son seems really happy with the phone …..thanks to a user here called bagman for help too.

        • Its a very specific number they made up, its possible that it's been gobbled up by app updates since the ROM was cut.

  • There was a n issue years ago regarding advertising of storage space on a handset. Not sure where it came from but it was well known company was asked to explain why its device was advertised at 16gb storage and only having 11gb for user.
Also other handsets with the lesser 8gb and 4gb wherw thrown into it so from this they started advertising what the uswr will have.

I have a zte fit, at start with the crap partitioning from pre android 4.0 they had a app parttition of only 2gb then a mass storage area but with some reading they released some software to repartition the storage to have a true 4.7gb app and user available storage.
Turns out to be a gtreat device only to be hampered by the camera but a good third party camera app can help out a bit.
