Best Chinese Android Phone for Telstra

Hi everyone,

Looking to get a new chinese phone, criteria as follows:

  • Chinese brand name (Meizu, Xiaomi, Oneplus etc)
  • Price isn't a concern but if there's a $300 model which presents better value/$ than a $600 one, I'd go with the cheaper
  • Premium quality, shouldn't feel cheap
  • Great battery life
  • Great display
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • 5" is ideal, but 5.5" I'll consider
  • Compatible with Telstra's 4G bands

Cheers guys and gals in advance

  • Isn't everything made in China these days?

  • Why it has to be Chinese?

Sony has good deals today, just launched on the deals side few hours ago.

    • I do have a specific (irrelevant) reason as to why the phone needs to be Chinese

      • Curious, what's your irrelevant reason?

        • I can think of a relevant reason- dual sims. It is one of the few prequisites I have for a phone, it's on nearly all China phones, including my new 50 buck Doogee, but not on the fancy big name brands you can get here in Australia.

        • This is right. Anyone looking to a $40 bi-monthly serious saving by $10 starter kit should want a DSDS as standard. Port in &<>out benefit? Next handset of mine shall def. do DualSIM .

Whole 4G700 thing was overrated; hardly a benefit from my the Pixi 4g assessment. Just get one cheapie/rural/$29 on special.

        • +1

@daver: Most dual SIMs will have the secondary SIM working only on 2G. That's okay for now but Telstra and Optus are swtiching off the 2G in the next year which might render the dual SIM useless.

        • Yes, a good point - be mindful to check both slots 1&2 tick the 4G support box— a DSDS like the popular XM Note 2—
(When 2G gets decommisioned dual_gsm/voice goes) 4G on any card set to 'data' continues as normal [*XRN2].

This affords one the option now to fit mobile broadband in the side a handy SIM#2. OR, a VF voice#365day. OR next month's provider, right after ported out SIM1 carrier. Holds these SIMs.

        • @daver:
No point checking cause none do as yet. or if they claim they do, only one can access 3/4G at any one time.

        • @smiley-k:

          D'oh!

        • only one can access 3/4G at any one time.

Yeah this^. Certain of "both slots 1&2 tick the 4G support box," the 2 each may be used at different times i.e: not to assume both online together or a want for two incoming voice lines by commonly phones without a DA/'Dual Active transceivers±.

  • None of them support Band 28 4G..
If you "need" that, then you have to look local.. Oppo R7S would be a fair candidate

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro ticks the rest of your boxes..

    • Quick google tells me Telstra offers 4G on bands 2100Mhz, 1800Mhz, 900Mhz, 700Mhz
Does a phone need to support only one of those bands for Telstra 4G to work?

      • +1

        Depends what area you're in.
Cities have good 2100/1800 coverage. 700 (Band 28) is used for in-building coverage and regional coverage.. surprises me that they're using 900MHz at all, maybe that's a future state?

        • Does that mean that if you have only 700 it will work on 4G everywhere there is 4g?

        • @shaybisc:
          No…
Some areas will have no 700MHz coverage.

    • Redmi Note 3 Pro looks unbeatable on paper, would seriously consider it if I am buying a new phone. The pain however is having to waste quite a bit of time to unlock the bootloader and flash the global ROM. Can't stand all those China ROMs (Xiaomi or otherwise). It can be a bit of fun but really don't have that time luxury these days.

  • The Huawei Y5 is locked to Telstra, is a bit over $100, and supports all bands for blue tick AND 4GX. If you can't get a phone for $300 to match it in bands - what are you wasting your money on?

    • Good point, but fair to say I'd probably prefer a larger than 4.5" screen and better processor over coverage of all bands. Thanks for input!

  • Optus sellthe oppo r5 for 200 pre paid.
