Cheap Computer Speakers That Are Decent Quality

So my Logitech ones blew out, I am looking for some decent quality speakers for my computer that is not too expensive. I'm not too crazy about the highest audio quality as I'm just listening to music and watching a movie here and there on my computer. I was told there were some no name brands on eBay ones that were good but idk.

Any help would be great!

  • did you like the Logitech ones you had?

    • +1

well they had a short life and died so not really

  • The Logitech THX ones are amazing: really loud bass.

They're $149 from officeworks with a 2 year warranty, I got a second hand pair on the Gumtree for $40

  • My Logitech Z5500 died yesterday so I'm in the same boat but I'm happy to spend up to $500.

Did a bit of research and have narrowed it down to a few options:
Audioengine A5+ - only problem is that it used to be $399 (or even $299 during a pccg sale) a few years ago but the price has skyrocketed since then. Plus, it's got no subwoofer and I'd have to spend double to get one.
Corsair SP2500 - people say it's only really good for gaming and mediocre for everything else.
Swan M50W - this seems okay with the only possible issue being the lack of colour choice.

Would anyone care to give some thoughts?

    • Audioengine - hipster speakers, unfortunately have also inherited the hipster tax.

I've got my Z5500, although the dock has been playing up for a while, I expect it to die soon. The speakers sometimes stop working, hear random crackling, all sorts of weird stuff.

Not sure what I'd do to replace them. To get something similar would cost a hell of a lot more than what I paid for them, and probably wouldn't perform as well. Perhaps the best option is to just keep the satellite speakers, get a new sub and amp?

      • Unfortunate that it's gone up in price. :(

I've isolated the problem to the subwoofer and specifically the 'front right' port. That's not the only problem with the set though, the remote has been having issues for a while. I can't seem to find a replacement subwoofer I can buy which doesn't cost an arm and a leg unfortunately.

From the options I have listed, I am leaning towards the Swan M50W because it's currently on MassDrop but I don't know whether it would be a downgrade from the Z5500. I know won't be missing the 3 additional speakers since I never use them but the bass might not be as strong. It's too bad the Z5500 replacement, the Z906, is complete junk.

        • After looking at the available offers of PC speakers at the moment, I must say I am utterly disgusted! There's nothing out there!

I was thinking some years ago of switching to a good pair of monitors, so… my choice would be, in order of preference:

          1. Try really hard to fix the Z5500
          2. Make own 5.1 system (if my size of room permits), else
          3. Buy a good pair of monitors that will last

So, if you are not up for the first two, go the monitors :)

If your as serious about sound quality as I am, then you would want to pay the extra few $ hundred and just be happy.

@faceman54: the OP said: "Nothing over $50", suggesting "extra few $ hundred" is plain silly.

        • @derek324: Was I responding to the OP ?

I'm not interested in discussing sub $50 pos speakers.

It's good to see that you just read one sentence out of context.

        • @faceman54:
Hey mate, just letting you know that through the 10% ebay coupon trick and stacking it with an easter sale, I got a pair of JBL speakers (LSR305P) for $404 which isn't too bad considering I needed them quite urgently. Might be of interest to you.

I still have a set that works fine. Never perfect sound balance, but nonetheless amazing and still fond given price paid. I'm keeping an eye on this listing - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002WPSBC for amusement value to see if remaining get purchased at the price being asked. They did have an RRP of $999 upon release all those year ago, though you'd really want to be keen at this point for the specific sound, to buy.

Anyway, awhile back I stumbled on a pod extension cable that I wish had been around when I first set-up the speakers. It would have been pretty useful. That + various options for keeping sets somewhat functional - even as secondary, after control-pod death - pod bypass cable, actual, albeit half-baked, pod replacement, etc., are available from this eBay seller: http://stores.ebay.com/treecity123
Also a replica remote, there, if you don't want to use a universal one.

If you have distinct audio glitches beyond the pod playing-up and want to salvage, embarking on capacitor swapping is the rather involved (not entirely straightforward or cheap to do properly) best first step. Google for the dedicated threads, and photos, if you're keener than I may be, down brass-tack track.

Even if not of specific use for you now, if you see any other threads on OzBargain in the future that feature dying z5500 lamentations (already a few of those in the past…) maybe link this comment as might be of some help, there.

          Thanks.

        • @Tas:

True story, a few weeks ago I found a fully functional (but somewhat dusty) z5500 set with everything included (except the wireless remote) out for kerbside collection in Brisbane.

I sold them within a couple of days for $200 cash on Gumtree, and purchased a z623 set off gumtree for $40 as it is a more manageable size. So net profit $160 and free speakers :)

        • @juicedpixels: You did well!
Never ceases… Amazing what people throw out. Maybe they were left to someone who couldn't work out how to set them up, or maybe just couldn't find space for them, either. The sub is certainly sub-stantial…

  • Are you wanting compact size or would you go for something bigger? I settled for a second hand sony bookshelf stereo(compact) with speakers from eBay for $15. Has a 3.5mm line-in so good to go.

My previous computer/amp setup used an old Yamaha 5.1 receiver - excellent sound. But big.

  • I've heard good things about the Microlab Solo's 6C 7C (check whirlpool)
