iPhone 5s on Kogan Good buy?

My 15 year old has her first job and wants to buy an iPhone. Kogan currently has 20% off eBay sale. This would make the iPhone 5s $418. I believe it is a "parallel import". Would this be a safe buy for her? Many thanks for your help.

    I'd suggest going to aliexpress.

    How about a 5C?.

    they start at US$115 (AU$160) delivered for a as-new-refurb 8GB.

    A 16gb 5S can be bought from US $226 (AUS$303) Link here

both of these have a lot of postive feedback.

they may cost less using the phone app.

also, on 29/3 aliexpress is having a 6th birthday special and lots of mark downs but they currently aren't saying how much of a markdown. so, save a few phones in your cart and then on the 29th (their time) check the cart to see if they have been reduced.

pay with a 28degrees card to avoid crappy conversion rates.

I'm going to disagree slightly here, generally Aliexpress is good for cheaper items but lines get blurry with technology items. If something goes wrong, it will be much easier to negotiate with Kogan than Aliexpress.

true. warranty may be a problem if something goes wrong.

I did hear a lot of people recommending not to buy phones from Aliexpress because they tend to send you ones with a lot of parts replaced with OEM parts.

I disagree. A 8GB iPhone is absolutely useless in this case. A 15 year old will want to have photos , apps and music on their phone. Roughly 2GB is required to run iOS properly.

I'd wait for a little bit as I said below for the 5SE. It'll give her a chance to save a little more and you'll get a newer phone with new components.

Not a good buy. The phone is 3 years old. If she really wants an "iPhone", wait till the iPhone SE is released and get a parallel import. Better specs at about the same price.

Bought an iPhone 5s from Kogan years ago, no problem with the phone at all, it's still going strong. Because the phone is a 'parallel import', it came with an adapter for the charger to plug into the Aust power point. My adapter stopped working within a year, I wrote to Kogan, and they sent me a replacement within a week, no hassle. Despite the problem with the adapter, I think it was a good buy.

  • Why would you want a 3 year old phone.

Wait till stock of the 5SE comes in.
