Japanese Green Tea Back into Aus

Hi all,

Nearing the end of my big japan trip and loading up stage of all the green teas, and their packages sweets/desserts/biscuits you see all around.

Has anyone actually been stopped and said they've got green tea at airport customa – both the pure matcha and more roasted types (hojicha, sencha, genmaicha etc) and know for certain that customs then waived them through? So far my last two trips I've been lucky to not be bag checked but just wondering if anyone has actually had the conservations with customs and can advise to reassure me. Wouldnt want to buy a heap only for it to be confiscated! I assume it should be ok as theyre bought in tea shops then sealed, but not like factory proper vacuum sealed. More the typical antique brown strong paper bags. But japan as any would know or expect should be alot more acceptable from a customs pov i thought.

Also a bambo matcha whisk.

  • bamboo products are fine.
Last two times in Japan I've brought back loose leaf Sencha and declared it; just got waved on through both times.
But like anything with customs individual discretion is it play whether or not they are right.

if packaging is good, then it will be allowed to enter. As long as you tick 'yes' to all the declaration regarding plant and or food.

I've brought in tea leaves and cooked anchovies in non commercial packaging ( plain plastic container). I ticked yes to all declaration regarding plant, food, soil (well, my worn shoes contained soils). The officer didn't even want to see my bag.

if you are too concerned, buy one of those cheap commercially sold tea from supermarket, remove the content and put your tea inside the packaging.

I've brought in loose leaf in plain packaging and matcha in commercial packaging without problems. Just declare them.
