HP Compaq 6710b - Upgrading RAM and HDD

Hi I have an old HP Compaq 6710b laptop.

It's old and not so fast, but the screen is still fairly decent at 1650x1050.

It doesn't get used much at all but I want to upgrade the RAM to 4GB (max) and a new HDD because it does seem to struggle.

I believe it uses DDR2 SDRAM SO-DIMM 200-pin. Where is the cheapest place to get 2 x 2BG sticks?

Any issue with these I found on eBay? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-4GB-2x-2GB-PC2-6400-2Rx8-…

Would any new Notebook HDD fit the HP Compaq 6710b? I'm not sure if my HDD is SATA.

Would a hard drive from a USB Portable HDD fit the HP Compaq 6710b? I have a couple of 500GB USB Portable HDD spares that I can break out. Saves me buying a new HDD.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have this exact same laptop. Was a castaway upgrade.

This laptop, even with 4Gb ram and an SSD isnt not a great performer. The laptop runs Win7 with a slic but I think the X3100 gpu isnt that great when pushing 1,680 x 1,080p.

You can get 2 x 2Gb ram off ebay for about $30 and an SSD any day off the front page of this website.

But saying that, this laptop with its almost FHD screen beats any of the shitheap 1,366 x 768p laptops on sale here.

  • Thanks!

castaway upgrade? runs Win7 with a slic?

I only use it for downloading the odd form or for storing and managing photos from phones/camera etc…. it doesn't even get turned on once a week so I'm hesitant to spend anymore money that I need to. Definitely no SSD.

It doesn't have to be fast, but at least usable. I'm still running VISTA.. I should look at upgrading to 7 when I get the new HDD.

Mine doesn't seem to have any issues with playing 1080P, apart from the fact each 1080P movie uses up about 6% of the existing HDD haha

You're correct about the screen, that's why I said it's still fairly decent for photos and text.

  • I'm a IT person. When companies upgrade their stuff, I often get their old stuff. This is their old stuff I was supposed to 'recycle'.

There's a way you can install Windows 7 and then authenticate it against the laptop itself but anyway… technical stuff.

Its a fine laptop for occasional use. With 4Gb and a new hdd it would probably run Windows 10 fine.

    • I have a couple of tablets which I use for web browsing at home, so the laptop seldomly gets used.

Hmmm, any pointers on how I can get the Windows 7 to authenticate it against the laptop itself?

I know my Dell at work doesn't need a Windows product key as it's built into the BIOS, is this laptop similar?
