Masking tape stuck to microfibre cloth

http://i.imgur.com/L3IBmXD.jpg

Hi, recently bought a microfibre towel and found it had masking tape stuck to it. How can I safely remove it without damaging the microfibre? The fibers are all stuck the to edge of the tape which makes peeling it by force not an option as it will inevitably ruin the towel.

This is an expensive and quality microfibre cloth so please do not suggest that I throw it away. Only helpful comments please. Thank you.

    Have you tried the hairdryer trick?

    You could use some household chemicals to weaken or dissolve the adhesive that holds the sticky tape in place.

    Maybe… acetone (nail polish remover?) but I don't know whether if the acetone will discolor your cloth. Try one little drop and see if it reacts.

    Otherwise simply soak the cloth in warm water until the tape is easier to remove with your fingernail.

    Try to get some Goo Remover/Goo Gone et al. from your local hardware or supermarket, it's actually good stuff! ;)

    • At Bunnings now. Will pick some up. Thanks for the suggestion. Will combine with the hair-dryer trick above.

    hmm, how expensive are we talking about? microfibre is actually a cheap synthetic material. the wholesale price isn't more than a few dollars per sqm.

      $12 for a 40x40 530 GSM made in South Korea expensive haha. Hence why I really don't want to ruin this cloth.

      • 40x40 530 GSM

        530 gsm is a heavy cloth. what's the application?

        • Car detailing, for buffing out polish or wax.

        • @idonteven:

          i see.

          the easiest, safest and the least damaging way to remove glue is to use ethyl alcohol. test a few drops on the corner of the cloth.

          Yeah I'll try to use the least aggressive method (warm water) and gradually move my way up until I can remove the adhesive. Thanks for the tip mate.

  • You could try a non-"icky"-sticky, clear packaging tape pressed onto the sticky residue to lift that?

    I've done this successfully before on clothing where they've put a stupid, sticky size-label on the actual material (idiots!).

  • soak it in water for a couple of days?

    I would try the same principle as removal of chewing gem trick - instead of using ice cube. Put the cloth in the freezer. Make the sticker tape hard and less sticky, then peel. If persist, use eucalyptus oil - best to remove sticky glue.

    Soaked it in warm water which got the masking tape off and used de-solv-it to remove the remaining adhesive. Worked a charm.

    Thanks everybody for the great tips!

    • If the cloth cost $12, you most probably just spent $10 on the "de-solv-it" solution which you most probably use just this one.
      In addition, assuming
      * your car consumes 10L/100km
      * Bunnings is 20km return trip
      * petrol is $1.2/L

      The return trip would have cost you $2.4, not including depreciation of the vehicle.
      It would have also cost you at least 30-40mins return trip…. In that time you could have been on ozbargain and found yourself another bargain saving you more than $12!

      I definitely think it would have been cheaper for you to buy another one of these cloth and spent that time on ozbargain finding your next savings :)

      • Haha thanks for the maths. I was happy to find a product such as de-solv-it exists and will be using it for other situations. I made sure to head to Bunnings on a return trip from somewhere else so I didn't spend any extra fuel =D
