Not Being Charged for Vodafone Mobile Data

Hi there :)

I've recently ported to Vodafone prepaid combo and I've noticed that there is a huge discrepancy between the data that I've used (8.76 GB) and what is showing under "my usage" on the voda website(340.4 mb). Any idea why this is happening, and more importantly, what will happen when I recharge?

Thanks,
Wiki aka Mrs Jar Jar Binks

I saw someone on another forum report that their provider took a couple of days to add a large amount of data they had used onto their account. There could just be a time delay between usage and charging just like other types of services where charges take a few days to show on an account. I hope the charges eventually end up in the correct billing cycle otherwise there could be problems. Good luck getting it sorted out.

    • I hope the charges eventually end up in the correct billing cycle otherwise there could be problems.

It's a prepaid sim so they can't charge me more than what I've already paid for it.

It also looks like the 340MB was used on the 25th of March, which is a little over a week ago. There has been no update of my data usage since then. However my calls and txts usages have been updated correctly.

This was precisely the issue that caused me to swear off Voda forever…just watch them carefully OP.

      • But if it's prepaid , there is no billing cycle . Once I've run out of credits on my phone , that's it. Isn't that how prepaid work?

They applied a shitload of data charges to my account the following month after I'd recharged…bingo, credit instantly gone. I was filthy, threatened TIO, blah, blah…eventually got re-credited after a fight, but only after quite a few days with no service…ended up not worth the hassle. I moved on to post-paid with another provider shortly thereafter.

        • @StewBalls:
I didn't realise that they could do that on a prepaid account O.O Thanks for the warning.

          Edit: Was it pre-sept 2013?

        • +1

@Jar Jar Binks: It was quite a few years ago (yes, pre 2013), so hopefully they've fixed their billing systems…they eventually admitting being in the wrong, but apologies & admissions of incompetence (if somewhat convenient) only go so far when the customer is actively being disadvantaged.

        • @StewBalls: As of now, I've used up 9.17GB of my 10GB data allowance and have received no txt warnings, which were meant to be sent at 50% and 85% o.O

@Jar Jar Binks: I have nothing to add other than earlier indications of data-usage information via Vodafone being a problem. Post-paid and a bit dire, falsely billed on multiple occasions by Voda reseller courtesy of various make-believe usage originating from Vodafone.

A step in the middle, but general data-usage update warnings average at only about 70% reliable in my experience, including experience more direct from other telco plans. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't.

I have a Vodafone-proper SIM, but as adjunct. Currently gets not enough use to notice any anomalies with data. Despite experience of others, you would appear to be in currently safer position being on prepaid, should you need to challenge anything at all with them. Likely that you won't need the TIO.

Maybe just enjoy the data at the moment without worrying?
Nearly 10GB in 10 days is quite a lot. Hoping not Mental+Floss videos in unnecessary resolution, but at least some Netflix+Chill, instead. Also, Wiki+Hello. I hope that you are well.

          Hello Tas :)

Likely that you won't need the TIO.

Nope. Looks like the problem has been solved. The data counter is working again and is currently showing 8.86GB remaining. Can't decide if its a :-) or :-(

Not too sure how or who 'solved' the problem either. Could have been :

          • me, when I restarted my phone yesterday afternoon.

          • following my livechat with a voda customer rep regarding an unrelated matter.

          • or a helpful ozbargainer or voda rep on here.

Maybe just enjoy the data at the moment without worrying?

I did. Hence the 10GB in a week. Free data from Telstra today so I'll start reining in my usage as from Monday.

Also, we are all doing splendidly. Hope you are well too:)

Remember Sure Telecom anyone? Vodafone charged them about $250,000 for old usage data, and almost put them out of business. They decided not to charge us customers and took the hit themselves, and then moved immediately over to Optus.
I believe the appropriate law allows telcos to charge usage data up to just over 6 months late. So beware of VF with this issue.

  • Any idea why this is happening

I would guess that it's to charge some customers more money given past behavior.

I am currently Not Being Charged for Telstra Mobile Data,
and they're making no secret of it, diesen Sonntag.

These days I'm increasingly reluctant to recharge a service offer that does not provide uncharged night data. +1-.-

I gather possibility that Telstra cards need not even be activated for free data, diesen Sonntag. Continued exciting times in telco stuff-up land, if so.

    • My Tesltra sim is activated so can't confirm if it will also work if unactivated, Herr Tas.

Reply intended to daver an diesem Sonntagmorgen, but just left as is because Sonntagmorgen..

Likewise with Telstra SIM, but gather gate valve simply opened for even unactivated ones, which is really quite incredible.

Oh! Talking of Sunday mornings…Maroon 5

The timestamp on your comment indicates that you cut it fine with the posting of that link. If I knew exactly which one of you did it, I'd arrange for an official caution from The Victorian Police.

If either of you EVER posts a link to this song, anytime during the day, I'll have you arrested.

          @Tas:

Is this one more acceptable? And that's my last off-topic comment for the day.

          @Jar Jar Binks:

A bit of a suck-up, but ok. More acceptable, though, if you hadn't swapped the link to the lyric version!

My last off-topic comment iswas this: That Maroon 5 album cover features only half the number of arms as Veruca Salt's very octopussy 'Eight Arms to Hold You', which features this song

Favourite song, not on that album, is, however, very morning relevant and about an American brand of window blind, all of which makes perfectly good off-topic sense -

          Enjoy.
You too, other OzBargainers who stumble into threads like this and who should also have better things to do with their time..
          :)

@Tas: I'm not clicking on any song links…PTSD from one too many Rick-rolls! ;)

        • @StewBalls: You'll be right, Stewie - there are some therapy-dogs with fish in their mouths in that second Rick-roll.

If any consolation, I also now have PTSD from realising that song to be twenty-one years old and that Louise and Nina are now both pushing Fifty.

Stop the world, someone. Please. :(

My experience with Vodafone is that they are thieves and their customer service is ZERO. We took a free phone (no such thing really) on a plan but upgraded to a better phone for an extra $3/mth. 12 months after the 24 plan had ended they are still charging full price for the plan plus the $3 upgrade cost for the better phone even though phone had been paid off 12 months earlier. No offer to provide to new phone at 24 months like Telstra does to keep their customers happy. No offer to provide a partial refund. No valued customer offer…sorry they did offer the standard retail offer. WOW. That was their valued customer offer. Never again. Bought a phone outright and switched to a better Lebara plan (carrier is Vodafone) at less than half of the Vodafone plan price. They also cancelled my old phone number because I hadn't used it for a while. Had no choice in the matter.

  • I would rather shoot myself in the face than ever be in the position to ever sort out an issue with Vodafone on the phone again. To having to retell the issue multiple times to whoever they decide to transfer you to and then when they say they will fix it to having to ring back and redo that process because it wasn't fixed.
