[Sydney] Suit Recommendations <$500

Hello Ozbargainers,

It's time to get a new suit and I was just wondering if anyone had any particular recommendations on where to get a nice suit in Sydney for around $500. Particularly interested in a conservative dark navy suit - no pinstripes, checks etc.
At the moment I have my eyes on MJ Bale but read some concerning comments on a previous deal here. Am open to all suggestions - both in-store and online.

Whilst on this topic, do you have any tailors you've also had positive experiences with?

Many thanks~

  • Do you want suit + tailoring to be <$500 or just the cost of the suit?

  • TM lewin has got their navy mohair suit for 249 on sale at the moment.

    • Thanks! Love their shirts; will check them out.

  • I have always gone through MJ Bale. I've never bought off their internet store, I find that they're more than helpful in store. Last time I went was in Macquarie Centre. Most recent purchase has lasted 3 years — could say nothing bad about them so far.

    What was concerning you?

    • Thanks! Just read some comments about some of their fabrics falling apart from a few people, but on the contrary have heard a lot of positive feedback from others. Will definitely pop in their store and try get a fitting. Do you know if their online "sale" items apply in store as well?

      • I went into the shop and upon checking out the "2 for a Grand" suits, I was happier to move up to the "2 for $1500" range, because the fit and comfort was staggeringly different.

The guys there were certainly keen on helping me out and were even able to knock money of the pants because they were on sale. Definitely better service than I was expecting.

Sadly, this doesn't fix your "I need a suit for $500" problem, but I would recommend just going in for a fitting and take a quote away.

  • Seems quite easy to find the style of suit you are looking for, any men's wear should carry them for relatively a low price. However, if you want quality then you will need to visit places that the others have mentioned, I did see that Peter Jackson's men's wear is doing a 2 for $795 atm, don't know about their quality as I've not bought one from them.

  • Also check out zara. Ive purchased a couple of suits from them recently.

  • If you want to try them on first or you want the personal touch of a sales assistant to talk you through the decision process etc….I cant help you. I'm a tightarse when it comes to suits, i should probably be more concerned but i cut large deals for a multinational as part of my job, represent them at exec meetings and regularly go to the kinds of events that the suit manufacturers highlight where 'image' is everything…and it's not. I buy cheap suits from Ozsale, sometimes 2 or 3 at a time and have a tailor modify them for me. From time to time MJ Bale suits come up on ozsale for $150 ish each depending on style/size. They even have Versace suits occasionally (even on Ozsale though these are still out of my range).

I only buy wool suits and I normally get something close to my fit then have a local seamstress alter the suit to fit. The fit can be a bit dodgy and in all honesty i have a couple of wool (super 150's) suits that i bought for $99 each that dont fit well and I rarely wear, probably a waste of money but I can honestly say i have never paid $500+ for a suit. i have a couple that fit great and I figure after averaging out the few that dont fit well and the few that do i am still well ahead of the Westfield pricing for a few good fitting suits.

Recently i have been being approached on LinkedIn by bespoke tailors. they probably see my profile and assume i would want to look sharp etc. I normally tell them i am interested but normally dont pay more than $250 tops for a suit …. then i never hear from them again.
