Any recommendations for Rinnai Natural Gas Heater ?

Hi everyone,

We have a new bubba in house and was wondering investing ~$1000 for a Rinnai Gas Heater is worth to heat our apartment during the winter months in Sydney. We have been perfectly okay with electric heater till now but with the new baby we are thinking of investing little bit more to make him more comfortable. Would love to hear your experiences.

To be honest, a Rinnai Gas Heater for a baby room may be overkill. They're one of the best gas heaters around ( i have one) but I think they could be too powerful for a bub room, unless you find the 15 (Gas Input) rated one, which may be the weakest of the series.

Don't forget they still omit CO and NO2 to an extent, so if you get one, you will need to leave a window slightly open

  • We use a Rinnai Avenger (RRP about $1200) to heat a whole house that is quite cold and drafty, so agree even a smaller model might be overkill in an apartment. If you do some online research there are tables/guides around floorspace / heater ratios that would guide you. Too big a gas heater would just be uncomfortable not better. Also agree with frostman about ventillation and these heaters can/will increase mould in your place.

  • Make sure you get a carbon-monoxide alarm, if you get a gas heater … never quite figured out why they aren't mandatory in NSW.

    • because NSW houses were traditionally so poorly insulated/sealed you could just about run a hose from the car tail pipe without risk of harm! I think the building standards still recommend vents in every room, a hold over from the days of gas lighting.

  • I don't think you can legally use a gas heater in a bedroom. I certainly wouldn't, and we use gas heating often.
Note also there is concern around indoor pollutants causing asthma and other respiratory problems. Another reason I wouldn't use an unflued gas heater all the time.

Sydney doesn't get that cold. Your baby will be fine with the heating you have been comfortable with.

  • Thanks guys. I was not planning to use it in bedroom but was thinking about using gas heater vis a vis electric. We have never used gas heater before so was wondering how effective both cost and usage wise it is to spend 1K upfront on a long run. We are currently renting so don't know whether the investment is justified.

    Cheers!
