iPhone 5S Screen Replacement

Oops I dropped my phone one time too many and this time it didn't bounce. The glass is shattered but the LCD display is fine. It is held together at the moment because it has a screen protector but I don't imagine that will last forever. It is currently still usable, but I would like to have it replaced. Can anybody give me an estimate of the likely cost - probably from a suburban shopping centre repair kiosk of similar. I am in SE Melbs. I called a place at Fountaingate and they told me $80 - is that right?

  • I remember meeting up with a former work colleague in Singapore around 3.5 years ago, she cracked the screen on her iPhone 4S while on holiday in Asia so we took it to Funan IT Mall where they quoted SGD $120 (AUD $110 at the time) to fix it on the spot. This doesn't mean you've got a bargain on your hands but I don't think you're being taken for a ride.

A quick (but not exhaustive) search for online repair quotes came back with prices higher than $80:

If you really want to feel good about your repair quote try going to an Apple store and asking for the official repair cost.

  • $80 is as good a price as you will get, but it won't be an excellent quality screen.
Some places use OEM screens, they'll probably charge $120-150…
Others will say they use OEM screens but don't.

It's around $220 to get an original screen fitted at an apple store.

  • I saw a lot of people in Melbourne are still using their mobile phone with cracked screen condition. Many type of expensive phones like iphone, high end samsung phones, etc. Why ? Is that really a "trend" :P ? Other friend told me like that. I think many people CAN afford to pay for screen replacement. Just work for 1 day or few days and anyone CAN afford to pay for screen replacement. Any info ? I am from developing country. If that "trend" happens in my country, I will not be surprised.

    • I've used phones with broken screens for ages, it's actually not that annoying and I sort of forget about it my brain doesn't even register that it's cracked

  • Thanks for the advice, folks. I ended up paying $120 because it had a compromised LCD - who knows really? I'm betting he saw $$$$ signs when the middle aged grey haired woman walked through door. Any way, it was a quick fix and he was a very personable young fellow so all is good. Btw - I couldn't have continued to use it because it wasn t just cracked but totally smashed with a very crazed pattern which made it hard to read.
