Wiress Modem and Router around $100?

hi all, i want to replace my now non working dynalink RTA1025W.
On whirlpool, ppl have rate this modem highly so I am thinking I might get another one of the same. But I only get speeds around 250kbps max, but that may not be because of the modem,.
I am with TPG.
Any recommendations.
Also, are the $50-$70 ones at MSY any good?

how many people on your wired/wireless network? What type of speed are you requiring? (just normal speeds, or gaming etc)

    • hi Davo1111, just 1 wired computer + 1 wireless laptop. Most traffic goes thru my wireless laptop.
Just need normal speeds for d/l's, torrents etc. no gaming

      • imo just get a wireless g router with adsl…. netgear/linksys/ etc

Open up the modem, and see if the capacitors are bulging on your Dynalink.
They're great modems but are subject to failure in these components.
    As per this thread

and the subsequent PDF link from that thread (opens in Google docs reader)

It's an easy task for anyone with even poor, self taught soldering skills like me.

    • thanks a lot scubacoles, I will check out those links.

      • No probs, hope it works for you as it did for me.. :-)

Oh yeah, and Mick, the RTA1025W is supposed to be one of the best modems for attaining a good balance between speed and uptime. Billions have a better reputation for speed, but also a better reputation for dropping the connection. Have you tried fiddling with your connection settings (if you can do so with TPG)?

  • I've got a Netcomm NB6 4+ W of some sort. Fairly easy to set up, no issues whatsoever but it does run warm.

  • I joined TPG a few months ago, and purchased the RTA1046VW from JMG for a discounted price as part of the new TPG customer deal ($140 including postage):

The modem works fine as is and I am consistently getting 8mbps (NSW) - very happy with my TPG connection.

The modem supports voice which I plan to add later.
