Help Buying Samsung Gear VR

Hi Guys.
I have a Galaxy s6 and love it. I am also a netflix-a-holic. Not too interested in the occulus ift however wanted to know if anyone has the new gear vr for s6 (not the innovator edition, the new one that fits both note and s6) and if it is any good.

Also, need help finding best deal for one in sydney (brick and mortar store)
Thanks

  • I have one with the S6 Edge, and I can say for how much on spent on it ($140) it was definitely worth it. Considering you use Netflix a lot, I could definitely see you spending a lot of time watching it in VR. Watching movies on it isn't one of the best experiences the Gear VR has to offer but definitely one that you can do over and over and still really cool nonetheless. For me I only watch my movies on the Gear VR now as it really immerses you and even supports 3D movies. Personally I still use it weekly after owning it for about 2 months.

The Gear VR is also great for showing off to family and friends and seeing their reactions to some of the immersion apps/360 photos on the Oculus store. The only downside is that there isn't really a great way atm to share screens with your phone to see what they're seeing. Personally I went out of my way to pay $10 to buy a screen mirror app called MirrorOP which works decently.

Something I'd like to mention too is that don't have your expectations too high regarding the resolution of the screen, it is in 1080p but if you focus on areas you can see small pixels, not very noticeable though.

    • Thanks for the mini review. I have decided to buy one today from the samsung experience store. the only other place i can find is mobilecity, however they are a bit far out for me today (uni in the city anyway)

  • I wouldn't bother using the S6 with the gear VR, its works really well however you can only use it for 5 minutes then you get overheating warnings. Have a google of'gear vr s6 overheating' to see all the issues, i've given up using mine till I get a S7.

Some people get round it by attaching fans to the phone or disabling a ton of apps but thats too much of a PITA for most.

    • That's strange, mine only overheats after like 2 hours of use. Though I have a S6 Edge. Turning on airplane mode and closing all tasks helps too, and isn't too much of a hassle.

      • I've heard such wildly varied reports on overheating it almost seems like every individual device is different. I have an Australian S6 and depending on the situation it can overheat after around 20-40 minutes use.

So many factors that could affect it, but overall it does sometimes diminish the experience a bit for me.

      • The Edge are supposed to be much better then the s6
